Well I finally decided where to build it.as I'm not a builder by any stretch of the imagination i'm going to keep the design very basic. pompeii build1 by dave-2, on Flickr the base is 1.4 x 1.4 concrete with reinforced steel and I intent to block what I would describe as a big capital letter a shape.

thanks Terry I may take you up on that offer. this is as far as I got on Saturday. pompeii build2 by dave-2, on Flickr a few small errors. i forgot the dpc on the first layer but remembered for the second.to high? I didn't want to start taking blocks off so thought better high than none. half bonding. just didn't have a clue, ive left myself a job of tying the centre piece(where I have placed the wood) into the rest of the wall.do I need to put pins into the wall to help?i have another layer to go and this will help.

I'm getting closer to the stage of laying the fire brick floor and reclaimed brick dome so my question is do I buy those buckets of ready mix fire cement for both or is there something else you all use?

and I'm making a eighty cm dome so if someone could hint how much cement I'd need for the above I'd be eternally grateful.

I'm getting closer to the stage of laying the fire brick floor and reclaimed brick dome so my question is do I buy those buckets of ready mix fire cement for both or is there something else you all use? Don't use firecement. Its expensive rubbish for our use. I made the mistake of buying two buckets (~£60) and now its just collecting dust in my garage. You can make something much better yourself. "Homebrew mortar" is a mix of Fine-sand, cement, hydrated-lime and powdered fireclay. Usually mixed in quantities of 3:1:1:1 with enough water to make it like peanut butter. You can get the first three things in nearly any builders merchants and the fireclay from kilnlinings or ebay. For my 78cm dome I got two 25kg bags of sand and 1 25kg bag of the others and I have some left of each.

Hi Kipper, if you are using reclaimed housebricks i'd push that Homebrew ratio to 5:1:1:1, or even 6:1:1:1. Thats building sand:cement:fireclay:Hydrated Lime. Use a bucket or ice cream tub to gauge the quantities. The blanket sounds a bit on the tight side. What was the internal diameter of the oven, and the width of the blanket, please? I'll get my calculator out... Vermicrete is Vermiculite (Micafil) and Cement with a dash of Hydrated Lime. Ratios of anything from 6:1 to 10:1 can and have been used, depending upon the user. You could see about 2-3 100ltr bags being needed, depending on the thickness applied. If you've got a Jewsons nearby, get two using the account code but expect to maybe have to get a third. You're lucky in that Newport has the very branch that Terry set up the account in!

Don't worry about not putting dpc on top of your first course. If it's on the second course...that's fine. Some may say it's overkill, but any introduction of a damp proof course at this stage will reap benefits of getting the best out of your oven when in use.
As mentioned....you may have enough thermal blanket. You can always pick up the correct stuff just off Ocean's way in Cardiff from Sheffield insulation (just before the entrance to Cardiff docks). Vermecrete has been covered. Strongly agree with jms.....don't use tubs of fire clay. That stuff won't set if used thicker than about 3 or 4mm thick. Use the homebrew mix as per Danno's post. Sand, cement and hydrated lime can easily be bought from any builders merchants. The other part of powdered fire clay is awkward to obtain. You can buy it though from a refractory supplier in "Spitty" Newport....or I have a bag of the stuff if you want (it'll cost beaucoup cans of strongbow though).

Hi Danno, thanks for the ratios. the internal diameter is 80cm and I will be using reclaimed for the dome. and the blanket I've got in mind is 610 mm I width. when you say a dash do you mean maybe a trowels worth into a mix of say 8:1 with an ice cream tub for example? sorry for my stupidity ha-ha

Hi Terry, if that powdered fire clay is surplus to requirements and enough for my needs im more than happy to reimburse to you the full amount you paid. just let me know and we can sort something out. i'm in no rush as i'm just getting my head around the materials and hopefully getting it all in ready for when I get the time to crack on with it.
