After a long time working alongside the local fire authorities and structural engineers and working closely with local city authorities, the go ahead has been given to build a traditional Pompeii oven (which conforms to all regs) on the terrace of a multi story building in London. The venue...... The build..... ...As usual I've a lot more pics but can't retrieve them from my computer.....shall post them when I can work out how......and post more pics of the ongoing build.....(2 more weekends to go) Terry

Wow that is a nice location for an oven. How are the materials getting up there? Is there a goods lift or are they all being handballed up there - the thought of the latter brings tears to my eyes!!

Ha ha yes, I was only thinking of the building materials but there will be the ongoing requirement for wood! Does anyone do delivery by helicopter in London I wonder

I think it is on top of a 5th storey building and NO.....there is'nt a lift. Everything has to be carried up a never ending stairwell. This was all done for me by the chaps who I'm building the oven for. The Chaps Thom, James and Bash. Thom and James run a mobile pizza business out of the back of a Piaggio (3 wheeled) Ape van They go by the name of Pizza pilgrims. Bash is partnering up with them for this rooftop venture which has been given the name Forzawin. Terry

I've planned for a 90cm internal diameter Pompeii oven....I could go to 110cm with the space, but would have to check with the structural engineer on board to see if this is feesable......

Are you using a beam and block floor system for the slab? Looking forward to seeing this develop

PreOats
I'm using the same system as beam and block ......but instead of the pre-formed bison beams and concrete block, I'm using standard 100mm x 65mm re-inforced concrete lintels and thermolite blocks. These lintels will be well supported by 2 main side structures and middle timber supports. Any one thermolite block will have 3 structural supports below it. Normally I would cast a 4" concrete slab with 14/16mm re-bar. As the weight of this build is paramount to design .....and planning, the same strength has to be achieved with the minimum of weight.
I hope to highlight the vent opening and chimney design in this build as this is one area where D.I.Yers have problems in getting their heads around this stage.

Terry, is this you they are referring to? Forza WIN is London's first outdoor supper club. Brought to you by the team behind the Pizza Pilgrims (in Soho) and some of their friends, it takes place in a beautiful garden in the beautiful New Cross. Being firm believers in the sharing of knowledge and skills, we thought we'd do things a little differently. Instead of just building the oven ourselves, we've got one of the UK's leading experts involved to come and teach you how to build them too. We'll also throw in a pizza making masterclass and some free beers. What more could you want? So for £35 you get: - 1 x pizza oven building masterclass - 1 x pizza making masterclass - free beer brockleycentral.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/pizza-jardinera.html

in central London I would go for that as I note "free beer" is not "a free beer" and I am confident I can get my moneys worth, throw in expert advice and it sounds like a winner.
I think Terry is just building but perhaps he is now rent a guru also?

Duncan.....good spotting !!!
....and yes it's me they are referring to. I have only heard of what these guys are planning in the last few weeks.......it has gone from me helping them for a day to build the dome in their back garden....to change of venue and doing......just about everything on the rooftop.
We have been swapping e-mails for a couple of months now (due to change of location and inner city red tape)....and only heard of what they are planning for this weekend in the last few weeks. Another type of person may have taken offence and walked away from the project.....but I'm not that other type of person and commend them in their entrepreneurial ways.
If all goes well for them, they will recoup all monies spent out for this venture.....before they even start to turn this into a commercial venture. For me it's another build on my portfolio to perhaps kick off my business of building wood-fired ovens for a living.
In all honesty they (bash, Thom and James) are a bunch of young guys (who I love to bits) who are doing something themselves to......get on in life.
