Back on track with the gap filled in. I considered Turkey's idea of some sort of second arch but I'm pleased I went with this option. Attachments:

The gap for the smoke. Hopefully it's big enough.

The front. Eventually most of this will be covered with house bricks so the I wasn't bothered with the messy pointing at 10.30pm at night.

The top (The gap isn't that wide lower down the arch protrudes).

...and the back of the chimney. I've no plans for any more fire brick. I'll strike it up next week to check for cracks before the insulation goes on. Attachments:

Pete.......nice build....
You are correct on thinking of having that entrance arch lower......it could have gone 2 bricks lower and still created the top rebate for the door. You have created the vent for the chimney directly against the internal arch.......normally I would use half bricks(or 3") where you have the vent, then create my vent. (this then create's a full surround to bed the chimney on) As you have gone higher with the external arch, this has probably made it easier for you to build the stack.
You....like so many others have just ....(including me), have done something slightly different but will achieve the same result. Don't be alarmed if smoke comes out the front entrance when first firing the oven up......as soon as some heat gets into the stack, I am confident it will draw well.

re smoke out the front don't some folk use some burning news paper to start the draw up the chimney? Once the heat goes up it causes suction that is self fuleing as long as the oven is emitting hot gas.
re the gap, you built on the rear arch sealing the gap and making the rear of the chimney stack? Very nice idea and looks very good all built up. Did not realise you where having a brick stack. Round the back after all the insulation the render will be up to the chimney proper and can be shaped as per your design wishes. Lovely job :-)

Here's a general overview in daylight. The wooden structure is just to keep the tarpaulin in place which I thought it prudent to remove prior to lighting the first fire. Attachments:

My son finished his last GCSE today so the fire was lit with a revision paper. The wood was stuff I kept hold of from the trees last year & kept dry in anticipation of a WFO one day...I think I'm going to need more supplies - it soon goes. I've a bit more left though. Attachments:
