A bargain from a local garden centre! £25 That chimney is very much like the one I have put on mine - only mine was a little more expensive (don't tell the wife!). Wish I could have found one for £25 - EBay had loads but they were mostly damaged. The rest of your build is looking good too!

Thanks Terry, Faz The chimney didn't have a price tag on it and when I asked the price I decided not to argue. Terry - your comment's got me thinking & I flicked through the QVS catalogue & the cable they sell for fire / smoke alarms looks like it will do the trick. I only need 2 or 3 metres so it won't be too expensive. One of the good things about the forum is that it promotes lateral thinking.

This is the second & final coat. I upped the mix to 8 Sharp sand 1 Lime 1 Cement Some firbres and.... ....& when I tossed the coin it landed on tails so No waterproofer in this layer. So I added some plasticiser instead. As Danno said "why would you wear two coats if you went out in the rain?" Attachments:

And the opposite side. Some of the mix I got miles too wet...but it still went on though. Whatever I did I couldn't get rid of the trowel marks completely. What could I have done to prevent them? Too late for me (unless I put some other layer of something on?) but others might like to know how to avoid trowel marks. (I did try a float but it didn't work for me) Very happy though. Attachments:

Pete
If you are going to put another layer on, the best way to get a decent finish is to wait until the render goes off a bit ...2-3 hrs (depending on the weather) then use a flat sponge and gently do small anti-clockwise circles with the sponge on the surface (if you're right-handed that is).
Can't be long now before the un-veiling ceremony.

Thanks for the tip Terry. I'll bear it in mind for my next build. I've taken up a wobbly brick. Somewhere I must have had an odd shaped brick because there was one spot which didn't quite fit together. It was OK when I laid it but because there was a bit of a gap it developed a wobble. Attachments:

A top tip :- This is my brick replacement method. Some cotton wrapped around a bit of wood. This way I can lower it in the hole & if I've put in too much / little sand & fire clay I can (and had to) pull it out again without mashing up the fire bricks with the screwdrivers. Once done snip the cotton I pull it out. Attachments:

This is how it worked. When done I brushed some left over sand & clay into the gaps. When I laid the floor I started off doing it dry. Later on I sprayed a bit of water on top to moisten it. Perhaps if I had laid them wet it wouldn't have wobbled in the first place?...but they would be more difficult to replace. Anyhow sorted now. Attachments:

Here is a better view of the internal crack which first got a look in on page 14. I filled in at the time with some Victas cement filler. It could do with a touch more in it some time. However as Terry pointed out the cause was because I didn't stagger the bricks properly. This photo shows it clearly so others don't make the same mistake. Attachments:
