Was going to start building the pergola for the new clay oven today . We have a small wall and thought we could drill into this for the post holders BUT Richard says that as he is drilling into the bricks they are cracking. Does anyone have any ideas how we can get around this or is it back to the drawing board. Thanks!!

It maybe just the surface of the brick cracking/crumbling from age/frost damage. A decent hammer drill will gently pass through any flaking of the brick surface and start biting into solid masonry. A normal "eyelet" for screwing into masonry usually commands an 8 or 10mm drill bit. If you could find one with a long screwthread and a 6mm hole...that would make the job a lot easier.

Sometimes starting with a smaller drill bit makes the job easier too. Like Terry said, you'll really need an 8-10mm sized plug and coach bolt to connect such a timber and be at least 50mm into the wall.
if the bricks continue to break up, which could happen when you tighten up the bolts too, look for a Resin-fix system. You still have to drill, but you blow out the hole, and bond in a threaded rod. This takes away the need to have an expanding plug.

Wow thank you!! Rain and gale force winds have stopped me in my tracks! Could not even get out there to get the clay!
