Hi All,
Need advice/help. I have built a brick square structure, which is reinforced inside with breeze blocks. I have it to a good height. I have found lots of advice and instruction on insulation, measurement, materials and building the dome, arch, and so on. My first obstacle though is getting a flat surface to work from. Ideally I want a thick 1m square concrete slab that will sit on the breeze blocks. From there I can add sand, wine bottles, vermiculite, calcium silicate boards (or any combination) and eventually firebricks. I just need to fill the void inside my brick square. Any ideas where I can source a large slab like this? I've seen many people pour their own but I think this is probably a bit beyond me.
Hope you can help
Thanks
Dan

If you don't fancy casting one in situ, why not buy 3 or 4 concrete lintels and put 4 x 50cm square paving slabs on them. That's what I did - you can see it in my avatar pic. Chas

Great idea, thanks. Where is the best place to source 4 x 50cm squared slabs? Does it matter what they are made of if there is insulation above them before sand, fire bricks etc

They're pretty well certain to be concrete. Ask about lintels too... it may be cheaper and easier to use just lintels, butted up to each other. Chas

You could also use use concrete blocks on their sides between the lintels. Concrete blocks are usually 440mm long, so you would space the lintels 440mm apart. This is similar to how they make a block and beam floor; they use T shaped lintels, but it will work fine with rectangular or square section ones - very strong!

Thanks both. Also am looking at fire bricks on the vitas website. There are 2 different depths. 32mm deep vs 64mm deep. I would prefer to go with the shallower ones for a better fit (don't want to go too high). Is there any down side to using shallower fire bricks? Lost heat through over floor?
