Been a bit quiet for me recently. We have had a few burns with each one seeming to get hotter. The last one I had more wood in the oven while cooking which really seemed to help with maintaining temperature. Also got a huge pile of wood now which smells lovely. I did manage to start the insulation over the weekend. I again ran out of clay but this time took a walk down the stream by our house and found a lovely exposed clay bank to dig in. All the rest of the clay I need will be coming from there! A few pics of the insulation in progress.

So far I've used 1 1/2 big bags of pets at home wood chip.

This has been a great build so far. Well done. Great pictures. Quick Q, Would you use naturally dug clay all throughout the project if you had to do it again?

Maybe, depends on the clay source I could find. The clay from the stream bank did seemed to have 2 distinct colours, one of which seemed purer. If I could find a large lump of the pure stuff then yes probably. It was also harder to mix the stream clay consistently. The nice thing with the bagged clay was that you know how much sand to add to get an almost (slight water content differences aside) identical mixture. My outer layer has yet to dry out so I can't comment yet on how well it holds together (need to take some pics of the current progress).
That said plenty of people have used naturally dug clay successfully.
If I was doing it again I think I might try a brick oven, partially as I think I one have found it easier to do small sections when I had a short amount of time available.
