This is something I have been thinking about for a good few years. Although the forum sometimes goes off on it's own tangent, the forum was created to help people build their own wood-fired ovens.
I was first drawn to Pompeii ovens after seeing a documentary on Pompeii called "Pompeii uncovered".....I was amazed to see how many of the bread ovens had survived the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.....brief history...
The earliest bread oven that archaeologists have found dates back about 3000 years. The Roman City of Pompeii was buried in molten ash after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. It was only re-discovered 1700 years later. In 1748 archaeologists started to uncover the once forgotten City. The work at Pompeii carries on to this day. The bread ovens that were found still had petrified bread in them.
I have now secured a workshop with office, kitchen facilities and toilets where I run my Clay oven building workshops.....

I am now thinking of setting aside a weekend in late summer for a Pompeii building exhibition. This thread is aimed at getting a little feedback from my members on making it happen.
The build will be a full Pompeii build from the slab upwards. i.e....under hearth insulation, hearth, dome, dome/arch transition, vent, chimney, thermal blanket, vermecrete layer and final waterproof render.......in other words a full build from the slab up.
I am not very PC literate so I shall be looking for someone who can set up a live webcam feed back to the forum so that members not attending can view live our activities on the weekend.
In addition to the Pompeii build I have a working Clay oven (a bi-product of my Clay oven workshop) and a Mobile Wood-fired oven which can both be used to practice bread and pizza baking in conjuction with the Pompeii build. Kitchen facilities will be available for members/attendees to make their own breads etc.
My operations are within a working mill in the heart of The Wentwood Forest. It has a large parking area for anybody wishing to bring a camper van and we are surrounded by forest picnic area's for anybody who wishes to pitch a tent. (The Wentwood Resevoir is also 2 mins away) Local Inns have already given my students of the Clay workshops favourable rates which can be transferred to this weekend.
A nominal fee of ? will be asked from attendees to cover any expenses (building materials, communal meals, flour from the local flour mill etc)....the event will be purely on a voluntary basis on my behalf and any monies left over from the event will be donated to the R3 Cymru Trust who operate out of the Wentwood Timber mill for their voluntary work in helping the less fortunate get back to civvy life.
As mentioned....this is something I have wanted to do for many years. maybe this year it may be possible.
Any comments, likes, dislikes, constructive critisism etc is not only warmly invited but may sway the decision to hold this event THIS year.
Terry
p.s....If I can get my head round creating a poll.....I'll do that also.
n.b...This board has been moved so all members and visiting guests can see it. All posts from previous posting in "Moderators" category have been lost...sorry....Terry
