Why has it been worse since the ban on smoking in pubs?

Because the smell of the smoke and stale smoke means that the other smells aren't masked! In those smells I include disinfectants, smells creeping out from the loos and anything that we used not to notice! Including vinegar!!!!

Just came across this thread so here's my 6 pennyworth.
I'm a brown sauce fan BUT couldn't abide it as a kid. I attended King Edward's (Aston) in Birmingham which was pretty close to the HP Sauce Factory and the Ansells Brewery and as a result of the "monday morning brew-up" when the smell from both of these was pretty pungent I hated the smell of beer and brown sauce and was always a ketchup user. Fortunately after many years of practice I love the smell (and taste) of beer and whenever I pop the top on my HP Sauce it reminds me of my schooldays (Remembrance of Things Past as Proust wrote).

As a kid we had neither red or brown sauce in the house, I too remember the pungent smell of hops when my father made his beer from scratch. My father had never been in a pub until he was 35 - since then we cannot get him out!
His beer was pretty bad but his elderberry wine was truly disgusting, he could very nearly have put me off booze - luckily he failed admirably.

I lived in a village About 4 miles from Banbury as a kid - and as a result I couldn't drink coffee untill I was about 25 ..... a bit like you, but with that I now don't have a problem. I rather hoped the same could be said for the vinegar, but no matter how I tried the same didn't happen I don't know what I would do if I hated the brewing smells and therefore beer though ;D Thankfully not a problem ... Ain't life fun?

The Banbury Coffee chemical plant is a worrying feature of the town. The Banbury Run for old motorcycles was an annual draw. The back road to Northampton however is a great roller coaster ride on a quick bike.
Also my favourite pub on earth is in Weston - Fullers ESB on draught and a midnight ride home on the back roads was amazing...

The Banbury Run for old motorcycles was an annual draw. And still is! Starting at Spiceball still - a yearly event. not managed to be up there at the right time for it though!
