I'm so fortunate to have found this sight . . . I have just built a Low Mass Wood Fired PIZZA OVEN ! It is constructed of 18 gal. barrel for the oven. This is inside a 30 gal barrel, which is covered with a 55 gal. for insulating purposes. The gasses from the fire chamber pass around the oven in a (one inch) clearance. The fire chamber is rocket stove technology Have a peek of Licker-Tee-Split evolving. www.flickr.com/photos/procomfort/sets/72157634639807783/

Is 55Kg Lightweight? I have just come back from the Benington Chilli Festival ( Great day out ) where a couple where doing pizza's in their 55kg portable wood fired oven, made for them by someone in Shorpshire. They are called pizza from the ashes and are based in Norfolk.

At 55kg sounds like a Bernito, who is based just outside Telford in Shropshire. We were out with our truck over the weekend. On Monday we did over 200 pizzas in 5 hours in our 1.2m Bernito. Managed to get 5 in the oven at once a couple of times !

More and more of these lightweight ovens seem to be popping up for sale. Im not bothered about the business side of things but I am keen to see how they are built. Ive got a bernito one myself. I really fancy having a go at building a mini one to take away on trips etc. Obviously the sellers wont give their secrets away but does anyone has any information on their construction? I cant find anything anywhere. The base if deffo a kind of fibreglass, outer shell has a thin gel-coat like layer and at a rough guess I think the base inside is some fibre board coated in fire cement. This is all speculation like. Anyone care to add?

If making your own you can use materials such as ceramic fibre wool ( you can buy a spray on hardner for this to create a smooth surface) and vermiculite mixed with fire cement. Both above are light weight options.
This can be mounted on a simple cordierite pizza stone Base.
