Hello everyone,
I am based in East Sussex and have just stumbled across this great site whilst trawling the web for info on cob ovens.
A little about me: My husband and I have a busy but exciting year ahead of us as we are doing a self build starting Feb/March 2014.
I am so looking forward to designing the garden and making lots of different areas for different purposes. Hence why I am on this site. Part of the garden will be of course for outdoor entertaining and I want it to be unique and special and not look like it's been thrown together from B&Q. I have been researching cob construction for some time now and my imagination has run wild with the possibilities of what can be achieved i.e. cob oven, seating, walls and other structures. But the real pleasure of all of this, is knowing that all the clay for my Cob will be FREE. You see, the plot is all clay, and lovely buttery clean clay at that. Part of the plot has about 2ft of good top soil on it courtesy of the previous owner and my own contribution over the past 3 years. During the build this top soil will be scraped off and retained for landscaping later on and indeed I will be keeping some clay back for my various cob projects but this still leave us with tons of clay to dispose of. We have of course budgeted for its removal but having dug quite a few holes around the site to determine the soil structure I am personally amazed at the quality of the clay. We do after all live in an area where a few renowned brick manufacturers have excavation and manufacturing plants ie Ibstock to name but one. So this got me thinking of offering my beautiful clay FREE to anyone who wants it. I have added photos so you can see the quality of the clay. Most of it is clean and could be used straight from the ground whilst some may have to be cleaned. I have done the snake test and it holds up very well. If anyone is interested please message me. We could even coordinate collection so that when excavation is in progress (Feb/March) our diggers can place it directly into your vehicle or trailer which would eliminate some back breaking work. See photos:
Now, I can see a few eyes rolling at this post 'Oh yeah, trying to cut cost of new build'. Well frankly yes, who wouldn't? Please let me reassure any sceptics out there that this is a genuine offer. I am happy for anyone to come and take samples away to play with in order to ascertain the quality of the clay. Just message me. This is an especially good offer if anyone is thinking 'big' ie Cob house or garden studio
Nice clean clay
Very workable (images of Demi Moore in GHOST coming to mind
