Great pics and they open quickly for us dial-up peasants.
Lovely oven - enjoy...

Hi Matt
I have started a base for an woodburning oven but I havent decided how I am going to build the oven yet. I like the thought of a clay oven probably due to the earthy building techniques. What mixture quantities did you use? have you found the clay hardwearing and not cracking and can you protect the outside of it with a weatherproof coating like cement to prevent putting a cover over it.
Cheers Nick

Navy lark I made mine 2 years ago. I not only used this site but also watched a few you tube links. The clay has cracked slightl;y b ut I just filled the cracks in , until this year when a branch cracked the chimney straight off my build and we had to do a bit of a remodel. becuase it was decorated we built a quickie frame and covered it as i said before until then we just used to tarp it .

Cheers Nick Hi Nick, I based my mixes on the info in the River Cottage bread book - I think that's a really good guide if you can get your hands on it (or pm me and I'll dig out the info). I'm not sure about cement cladding - others on the forum may be able to advise but I think you need to ensure it is a breathable type of cement. We went to town building the brick skin but I must admit I was sad that the beautiful clay dome had to disappear behind it - until Winter arrived when it was obvious the whole thing could get seriously frost damaged. I've had a little bit of cracking internally which I must get around to repairing (I have bookmarked some repair advice on Simon Brookes' excellent site

Hi Matt,
I first want to echo other on this thread...this is a BRILLIANT build!!
Can you tell me what book / plans / website you used (if any) in building this? I'd love to do something similar but I wouldn't even try without some sort of plans to go off!!
Nick
