I plan on rendering the outside of my Barrel vault WFO. does anyone have any experiences or ideas of the type of mixes to use?
it will get a bit warm, but shouldn't be too hot to touch.
i always want to make it a slate grey colour, is it best to render it then paint it? or colour the render?

Have you insulated well? What will the render be on to?

i have the inner layer of fire bricks then a layer of 25mm ceramic blanket ( i over ordered so it may be doubled up in places)
after that layer i was going to render it or i have plenty of normal house bricks lying around and could do a layer of these on top of the ceramic blanket then render.
the latter option wont cost any more, will just take longer to do (its my preferred option as its belt and braces)

If you decide to render on to the blanket you'll have to mesh it well then put a thick first coat on with some sharp sand in, give it a good scratch then render your top finished coat over that. Most people put about 3 or 4" of vermicrete over the blanket then render on to that, it gives you an extra layer of insulation and a solid base to render on to which is easier if your not used to rendering! Also 25mm isnt alot of insulation if your just rendering on to your blanket I would think you want at least 50mm all over if not more. I had 100 mm blanket over my dome then rendered on to that. The better insulation you have the less heat you'll lose and keep more massed heat inside your oven

thanks Keith
it will mostly be 50mm thick - i ordered double the amount of 25mm by mistake.
i don't think i will have any vermicrete due to the cost and lack of sellers near by - i think i will do the ceramic blanket, then a layer of normal house bricks, then render.
but does anyone know any good render mix recipes? i have tons of cement and builders/sharp sand available to me so i would prefer to make my own then buy anything.
