concrete poured ready for the insulation
65 x 205 x 1000mm calsil board from ebay to insulate the floor. although I'm using a modular oven now my plan is to replace it with a barrel oven in the future on the same base so i'm putting the insulation in for that now

it's now a waiting game for the concrete to set before the struggle of lifting the oven onto the base

G'day Now that's a nice piece of brickwork. Congrats on a good job, well done. Great you've included Heaps of pics, I'm sure they will be an inspiration and detailed step by step instruction for anyone contemplating building a brick stand ! Regards dave

For only your second time laying bricks, that's nice work!
Also you seem to have made quick progress which is a bonus. :-)

Thanks for the comments guys! I have enjoyed building it so far. There's still a bit to go with it though. I'll post more pics as I go. I've paved up to it today. I'm thinking of using the same sandstone pavers around the bottom of the oven. I can't think of a reason why this wouldn't work to keep the calsil board dry once pointed. What's your thoughts? You can see my first attempt at laying bricks with the wall to the left of the oven. It took 3 days to get it to this point ( excluding doing the base).

Thanks for the complement. Hopefully it won't take too much longer before I can learn to cook in it!

The oven is on, sandstone flags are on and it's pointed in so I guess its finished for now. I've had a curing fire where the top of the dome was 500°c inside and 70°c on the outside. I've now got to decide if its worth putting more insulation on it!

G'day You've got cal sil board on the bottom great. But the jobs not complete without the insulation over the dome. This will isolate your oven from bleeding the heat to the outside. Like using a heater in a car you have to first shut the windows . Heat management will be so much easier you'll be able to get it to temp and maintain temp much easier with the insulation fitted. And that's also a saving on wood too. Regards dave

Sorry Dave, my last post was a bit misleading. The oven came with 25mm of ceramic blanket already on it. I'm just not sure if that is enough or if I should add another layer. Regards phil.

G'day Now that's my apology I missed the word "more". From my experience the excepted standard is 50mm of blanket ( or 100mm of perlcrete). A lot of commercial builds use the bare minimum. So myself, I would add more. At the moment the ovens still a little damp from the build so that's possibly why the outer surface is so far above ambient temperature. If it remains above at 70C, as it dries I would myself consider more insulation. Regards Dave

Hello Ducky (that just doesn't sound right!)
Love your build thread. Thanks for sharing your build with us.
I've never heard of your modular oven supplier (doesn't mean anything) ...and I really like your oven base and BBQ.....a couple of arches always look good....and they also serve a purpose and look better than a concrete lintel.
I use a 50mm thermal blanket on my builds (same as CobblerDave) but if your refractory/Modular over supplier has supplied a 25mm thermal blanket attached to your dome then, you may want to add a layer of vermecrete (vermiculite, cement and water) so you can finish your oven with a waterproof render finish?.....

Hi Terry
Thanks for your comments. I have really enjoyed building my base and wanted to document my build as thoroughly as i could to put on here. I got heaps of inspiration and tips from other peoples builds and wanted to contribute and hopefully help others like I was.
Once the oven is fully cured I'll take your advice and add some more insulation to it.
Regards Phil
