Great build, Carl... Gary you might also consider K-Rend, though it's dearer than sand and cement and round here anyway, not available from Jewsons and so outside the Forum discount deal. I got it at MKM. I don't have great plastering skills, but the base coat is easily mixed straight from the bag, very 'plastic' and spread over my knobbly brickwork dome a treat. Two coats had it regularised and a top coat finished the job.
I plan to cover the dome in vermicrete this Spring as insulation (or lack of it) has become an issue and have every confidence K-rend will go over that too... so your base shouldn't be a problem. A bag of reinforced basecoat and finish was more than enough.

G'day I was never really happy with my render igloo oven. I was more than happy with my oven being out in the open, but was reluctant to place it under cover or box it in with a huge structure. More people have trouble with water problems with an igloo than with other coverings but I didn't want a huge structure. I finally noticed some ovens with a brick veneer cover and did the same myself. There would have never have been room on my stand for a full brick thickness. But bricks cut in 1/2 then those halves split lengthways were perfect . I didn't go to the bother of fancy brick saws either simple hammer and brick bluster. A collection of different bricks of differing colours and textures and I'm more than happy with the look. Makes it easy too cause I'm less than bricklayer. Added bonus is that ordinary house bricks are water resistant and the level of waterprotection has gone up. Still live on the side of a hill and downhill flooding is my only problem not the wet stuff falling from above. Regards dave

Thanks guys, as you can see from my new pics we've decided to change design a bit, it fits better with what's there already, we think? , anyhoo, thanks for all of your advice, cracked on over the weekend but as usual,,Rain stopped play, so we didn't manage to get as far as dome render,,does it make a difference to the render if we have a modular oven? Dave, you're an oracle, thanks, here's where I am so far, again cheers guys, really appreciate your in put,

G'day The render over the stand looks great. Like the brick arch as well that looks smart. You are probably considering painting over then render when finished. Id consider a low sheen paint as apposed to a high gloss . High gloss has the effect of showing up any tiny imperfections and is more suited to perfect surfaces which render isn't. Regards dave

G'day That's looking pretty smart I must say. You must be pleased. A suggestion. The steel chimney will expand at a bigger rate than the render leading to cracking and lets water into the structure. Wrap a piece of cardboard around the chimney and render to that. Remove it whilst still wet from the render. The gap left can then be filled with hi temp silastic. Automotive parts suppliers sell in in small tubes for car exhursts. Makes a flexible expansion gap. Regards Dave

So! I've given it a few small seasoning fires, sourced well seasoned hardwood, waterproofed and painted, bought or made the tools. Only one thing left to do, let's see if she cooks a pizza!!
