Stumbled accross this site whilst researching how to build a pizza oven. Just wanted to say hello before I dive into the threads to see what I can learn.

Hi all Progress has been slower than hoped but finally got the base completed. I basically have a three sided wall with lintels across and paving slabs forming the top. Opening at the front got wood store. Before I start building the dome, is there anything I should put on the slabs before I lay the firebrick hearth of the oven, or can I just put the fire bricks straight on the slabs?

G'day Current concern. No visible insulation layer on the slab. Future concern. oven entrance is build without a revel. Best to build done with an oven mouth then build the entrance to that a little larger than the mouth. This leaves a lip, a revel so that a close fitting door can be fitted. After Friday pizza you'll then have a couple of days of heat to cook with. Regards dave

Thanks Dave. Regarding insulation on the slabs.... What are my options? Thermalite blocks? Some sort of insulation board? Regarding the dome. The picture is only a guide. Not worked out how to do it. I just got a bit excited and wanted to lay some bricks in a circle Cheers Smag

Hi Smag....welcome to the forum.
Dave's comments are spot on. If you click on his oven build (at the foot of his posts) it will give you a much better idea of what you are trying to achieve. I would say that thermolite blocks would be the easiest things to use to create a thermal layer for your hearth.....the hearth itself should be a fire-brick hearth....or some other clay bricks/tiles to give you retained heat in your hearth. Research is your best friend at this stage so have a look at other people builds on this....and the Forno Bravo forum. There are also lots of vids on you Tube.
The front/middle of your support slab looks a bit suspect....make sure it is well supported.
Dave refers to a "revel" for the door. This may be an Australian term which we call a "rebate". Again....a little bit of homework and research will make things a lot clearer.

The picture was taken before bedding the slabs in properly. Now they are level and mortared in nice a level and solid. There is a thick lintel under it so it should be spot on. I am researching a lot at the moment as it feels like I have reached the stage of no return. Easy to get to where I am so far, but now is the time for more specialist knowledge. Should I put Thermalite blocks across the entire surface or just the bit under the oven? I have bought Fire bricks for the hearth, just need to get the bit between the slabs and the firebricks sorted Cheers Smag

I might have missed it but you don't say what you are building the dome from ? As to the thermolite blocks I think it's easier and more thermally efficient to put them right across your base because you need to encapsulate the oven with insulation. You then build your dome directly onto the insulation layer, then the top insulation layer can meet the underfloor one. One issue you may have is keeping it dry/covered while building as you don't want a wet insulation layer ! I used a cheap 2m x 2m gazebo from eBay which worked well.
