When I lived in Osnabruck, Germany I had a few half litre glasses of Maibock which appeared around Easter and faded away at the end of May. That was way stronger than it tasted - 14% Very nice indeed though. Wish I could get it over here in the UK, but only for weekends www.braukaiser.com/wiki/images/3/38/Maibock_II.png

As a bitter drinker, I would prefer to have a night on the beer where the biggest problem I have is the amount of times I have to go to the loo - rather than whether I can walk straight at the end of the evening ;D There are a few beers which used to have a fairly low Alcohol content but have crept up over the years, which really annoys me. Anyone can brew beer which has both high ABV and taste but to brew a low ABV with a good taste takes a lot of skill and will power. Unfortunately brewers who do this are few and far between. When you cook with beer it isn't too much of an issue, but if you drink it, it is! As such I actually prefer the 3 - 3.8 % ABV to drink. Although through the fact that sometimes there is no choice, it is a lot higher!

Talking of strong Belgian beer, I recall drinking Kwak in Brussels from those odd glasses in wood stands at the puppet theatre bar. Then after some Jupilers served in skulls at Le Cercueil finding a bar still open at 3am that only had Duvel (8.5%). I left most of it on the Grand Place, along with the contents of my stomach.

RG's Kwak glass. Kwak can be bought at Waitrose, Sainsbury's etc but I've never seen the glasses here. I'm not sure if they look more like crack pipes or old NHS 'sample' bottles.
