Hotstuff "I'm curious on what you mean by "pug" and what you mean by scarping out half an inch?" Pug is a term I use in place of "fill in" when referring to clay. "Scarping" is a typo.....meant to say scraping. It's easier to scrape out your small crack to give a decent sized opening which you can really fill....previous posts are spot on advice. Now then Hotstuff.....why have you built your clay dome in one county and the arch in the next county?......The arch is meant to "butt up" to your clay dome. You have a few options now...you have enough room to "dress" the clay opening and build another half brick arch or simply shutter up....with some bendy hard board etc, the underside of the arch and the clay entrance and then fill the gap with more cob. Are you trying to create a vent for a chimney?....if so it's maybe too late as it should have been created in the arch that is already built. I'll dig out a few threads with stage pics of this and post. Try to fill that crack.....it's not a big deal on a clay oven...it'll still work. Love the arch btw. Terry I see what your saying now do'h!! Also with such a deep entrance (sorry lol) It's going to be hard to get wood in and out (honestly this sounds wrong) and be able to get to the fire I might just have to knock it down and start it further back and also cut the top bricks in half to allow for the chimney.

We moved the arch back to butt up against the oven more now. The mixture we used to make thebarch might have been a bit "clayey" it just come right off. What mixture is good for the archway? If we make the top 2 bricks half bricks that should be ebough room for the chimney right?

Hotstuff Try to make them 1/4 bricks ....this will give you a good 5" square vent. When I've built a clay oven I have just bought a tall , cheap, thick walled ceramic flower pot. I used a 4" angle grinder to cut the bottom off....turned it upside down, then, cut the larger side to the shape of the arch. You may have another idea but if you go with this method you can use the same material as the dome build to bed the pot in. I hope this link works encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRoHamVW6w0v-15ekAWOqcD4h-FbYEBK24LSQmLZoC_iVl8Q-e6TQ ...it's the Pompeii oven I built for Kate Humble.......the chimney is the flower pot as described (the bit on top is a detachable piece of galvanised flue that I pop on when firing. I wish I had the time to look through the forum to find a relative build....I haven't but on the top of each page is a searchbar (in blue).....3rd title/button along is "search"....if you click on this and put a "search word" in the box....like chimney or arch or vent etc and press the search button.....it will give you ALL comments that have been discussed on that topic which have appeared on this forum......it's a very useful tool. Love your progress Terry

I have really enjoyed reading this !! It took me a long time to get around to doing my first build but oh boy was it fun. I am loving the photos!! The whole front of mine got smashed off by a huge branch in the storms a few years ago and I just reworked him and remodelled. Surprisingly it worked really well! Mine has stood me in good stead for about 5 years!!

G'day hotstuff Sorry for not answering earlier.... Sometime life gets in the way. Great to hear that your enjoying pizza and cooking in your creation. Sorry, no one warned you earlier that pizza doesn't mean the end of the construction zone in the back yard. Trust me you'll finish in the end. Only took me 4 years to finish mine in the end. Fussy or lazy I'm not sure but I got the oven that I wanted. Enjoy Regards dave
