Ok so for the past year, after about 30 firings, I have learnt that y ou can build an oven without insulation, however, relying purely on heat retention is pointless, it cools down too quick, you'll be lucky to get 2 pizzas done.
After a lot of experimintation I found that the best way (in my special case) is to fire it up, keep it going for a couple of hours, sweep the coals to both sides of the oven, and keep topping up with small bit of firewood. So the fire is still going on both sides while the pizzas are cooking. At the same time I block up the chimney and the doorway, with only small gaps, which smokes up the entire oven, and has just a small gap thats enough to keep the fire going. The flavour comes up amazing, the pizzas are cooked right through, although they do take approx 3 minutes to cook each, which is much longer than anyone with a proper oven.
So as a conclusion, if you want to do it properly - listen to the advise on the forum. If you want to muck around like I did, you still might get something, but you will have to experiment to get it to work how you want it. I'm pretty happy with the result, but I think one day when I go to do it again, I'll just follow an established method of building insulated ovens.
