I'm not convinced by the flexibility of lime these days, seems to set hell of hard compared to what it used to. I'm no "specialist" in lime tho I know how to mix it and put it on and skim with it etc etc but I'm no encyclopaedia of technical information on it

A few more photos, this time of the chimney, which I've finally finished. I assembled it in the garage first, as I wasn't wholly convinced whether it would work (aesthetically), but in the end, it's come pretty close to what I envisaged, so I'm really happy with it.The interior is a standard red clay flu liner, and the outside is made up from hand-made, reclaimed 'slips' (half-height bricks) which I in turn cut in half (lengthways) to reduce the weight (and overall dimensions). The top and bottom edging is made from quarry tiles.

I've not posted for ages for some reason, despite making steady progress. Here are some photos showing the ceramic blanket insulation, which I got the family nappy expert to put on, and one of the drying fires. The blanket was fairly easy to apply, and seemed to hold itself in place by virtue of its own weight. Once I was happy with the overall coverage, I secured it with chicken wire, which tuned out to be more tricky than envisaged, as any over tightening tends to leads to irregularities in the dome shape. Whilst render can smooth these out to some extent, it can't really compensate for major undulations, as I discovered later on!
