i cast mine separately,only because i thought it might get very messy trying cast it on top of the flue opening.

Thanks Dave Would you recommend casting the chimney base in place, or casting it separately? Sam Either will work ok. Yours is a pretty big oven so you might like to build the sides of the flue gallery in brick and just cast the top piece like slend has done. If you fill the space with empty plastic bottles or polystyrene you can then make a sandcastle on top with damp sand. The sand should contain around 10% by volume of water (a little powdered clay added to the mix helps), cover in strips of wet newspaper, then trowel the castable over the form.
