After part of the year with my oven I'm beginning to have second thoughts about how effective my chimney is. Once the fire is hot there is little or no smoke, and I can see that a lot of heat is going up the chimney. The larger problem is after pizza time if the wife wants to make bread with the door on I think we lose a lot of good heat. Now it's my own fault for not putting a damper on the chimney to begin with, but I'm wondering if doing away with it altogether might be the best idea. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome, you guys have more experience than I do and I would be happy to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

I see you have uploaded an image but my PC won't let me see it. Perhaps I need to upload...or download a new program to view it?
It seems a bit drastic action to demolish a chimney, but if you want to bake batches of bread, then you need a closed oven. If it's only the occasional loaf or two then your oven (even with a vent not outside the dome) should hold enough heat to bake bread after a pizza firing.

Thanks Terry,
Strange, I can see the picture fine on this side. I uploaded it from my office and I'm on my home machine now. I wonder why it doesn't show?
Maybe a better option would be for me would be to lower the height of the chimney and they cover it when she wants to do bread to keep the heat from escaping.

...must be my PC...or me. Your oven is now showing up......and a fine looking oven it is. After seeing it, it would be a shame to demolish it. (the chimney)
I see your oven has a rebate for the door.....and if the vent IS outside the dome wouldn't it be possible to still create a damper by putting a horizontal line with an angle grinder through 1 side of the pot.....enough to slide a metal sheet/damper in the chimney when baking.
By removing the chimney completely you may loose a lot of the air flow which helps your fire ......and perhaps your eyebrows?

Hi Terry, I do think you have the best idea. I am going to get a piece of iron and make a slider, I was looking at that very idea today. I can't afford to lose any more hair, so I will take your advice Thanks again! Bill
