Cec I was asking the same questions 3 years ago.....you're not thick!!!. I do however have a bricklaying background so apologies for the "OPC" reference. Terry H answered that.....it's just normal cement, whereas Ciment Fondue is quite different. The internal arch is the 63% height of arch to height of dome rule. The external arch...or tunnel is slightly larger than the internal arch which creates the rebate for a door. If you look at this picture... ....you can see that I've used 1 and a half bricks to form the outer arch. I have used 3 half bricks either side of the vent ......which created the vent for the chimney and the full bricks (at the front) holds everything in place. There are quite a few variations to the mix used for laying your fire-brick hearth. I used a 4:1:1:1 homebrew mix (sand, lime, cement and fire-clay) as a semi-dry mix. Others have used different mixes but we all have perfect results.......you'll have to pick the bones out of that one. ....always use the "homebrew mortar" for the dome/vault. If in doubt.......keep asking. Terry

to fix the initial layer of firebricks that will be the hearth you usually use a 1:1 mix of sand and fireclay . Not wet , if it's dry does it not make it hard to level it off ? . Is you diary on the old forum ? I spent alot of time making the insulation block work below level, As I was laying this onto termalite blocks these where sucking all the moisture out too quickly so I gave them a good dampning and then used my stiff mix (wet) and made some mini toughs so the bricks could bed in nice and it was supprisingly easy. My build diary is moved tho this forum now, check the pompeii build part

I made a start on the dome last night , I got the harth down and a single row of bricks , ( I will get pics up later ) . I was really surprised at how sticky the home brew mix is , it took some getting use to but had it sorted after a few bricks ,

that stickiness will really help when the joint is more vertical. :-)
good going, just make sure you stagger the joints as you go round, and after 3 runs you will need to cut some blocks in half to re adjust the spacing of the joints and go back to regular bricks. Even further up you will probably need to do even more cutting so it goes together well. I am only a few rings up so no experience yet but I have looked at the beauty partner builds and they cut bricks here there and everywhere. 0_o

I started doing another row tonight and I noticed that the mortar was still a bit soft from Thursday night , how long does home brew take to go hard ? . Anyway I'm on 2nd corse now and hope to nearly get the dome done this weekend if this bloody rain stops , I'm sick of making tents to cover me

Yeah got the dome Finnished today Right what do I do next ? , is it render with vermIculite ? , oh do I still use home brew with this Question ,,,, when it's covered with the thermal blanket and it's got chicken wire round it I'm guessing it's a bit spongey , so when it's rendered over this would it not dent if it was knocked ?

I think most folks skim the rear with homebrew mix to make a smooth surface, then wrap the oven in thermal blanket and held in place with chicken wire. then mix vermiculite 6:1 with cement and render with this and it should set hard. then finally outer coat,

a few pics of yesterdays work. this is befor i got it all finnished. as you can see it was going a bit egg shaped , i realy started to stuggle to get my head round it near the top but i got there in the end. to get the shape of the dome i used terrys idea ( top way ) , it worked well till i got near the top . i think it was some how pushing it inwards .so i used only 1 of the forms , the homebrew is that sticky i could move on to the next brick within a few mins. .
