Hi all. Having spent all summer building my oven it's now time for its final coat. In need of some advice with regards materials please. It's a vault oven built from fire brick, 50mm ceramic wool insulater and a perlcrete render. What options do I have with the final render? Will it be weather proof? Do I need to protect from the weather over winter? Any advise welcome thanks.

I have just finished a build using K rend as the final render.
Its waterproof so should see of the worse of the weather as long as a good seal is achieved around the edges.
It easy to work with as you dont need a perfect plaster finish. You rub off any high bits at the end and finish with a rough (but very rounded) finish.
I really like it.
Take a look at my build to see how it came out.

I'd endorse K-Rend, but assuming you're rendering the vault and leaving other areas of brickwork unrendered, damp will migrate from any surface exposed to rain (including the usual flat surface of the flooring base, if exposed anywhere) so only some form of total covering tarp will keep it dry - unless you've got it under a roof of some sort? Ebay have all sorts of cheap bbq and garden furniture covers that might be pressed into use, as did Lidl recently. Chas

Hi thanks for advice. What is the process for using K Rend? And can I colour it to get a dark grey?

Have you driven out all the water? It is not a good idea to seal up the oven until you've had plenty of fires in it and you're sure it's totally dry, otherwise the production of steam internally can damage the oven if there's too much of it. In addition it will slow down the time taken to eliminate it.

Great advice Dave, I was planning on drying the oven after the rendering had dried. Thanks.
Chas, I find the K Rend info a little confusing as they make all sorts. I have very little building knowledge. Should I use a base coat and a finishing coat or should I use the one coat application. There's K Rend spray, K Rend silicone, Dash receiver, wet dash, rough cast....,,confused.
What about a 3:1:1 sand, cement and lime mix? What's the difference?
Thanks

Thanks Made simple for me - local builders merchants only had base coat (reinforced) and finish, and only in white. Sand/cement/lime will do the same job, is cheaper and will inevitably be thicker and so add a bit of mass/insulation but will need painting to colour. K-rend is expensive but an easy self-coloured spread. I'm not much of a plasterer, so 'expensive/easy' it was for me. Chas

Did you think about waterproofing? It can be critical. I used Waterproofing sealant to solve this problem and avoid possible accidents. I recommend you to think about it if you didn't.
