Hi all, My husband and I did a course making a cob oven with Richard Scadding at Earthovens last year. We've now built a wooden outhouse type thing to keep it dry and we've done the plinth and are ready to go with it but we are having a bit of trouble sourcing some clay. On the course up on the Welsh borders we just dug it straight out of the ground, mixed it with builders sand/straw etc but the stuff round here where I am isn't any good. Any ideas about the fireclay on the internet. Would that be suitable to use with sand and straw or do I need to be thinking about something else? Thanks in advance

Usually there is a layer of clay beneath the topsoil. If you dig down you should find it. Failing that the cheapest clay should be Bricklayers clay, which comes powdered in large paper bags. Contact a bricklayer to find out where they obtain their supplies.
