I have to rolls of 25 mm ceramic blanket to put on the oven once I finished it ! That should give me 75-100 mm of insulation right ? The oven shouldn’t be hot to touch with all that insulation on would it ? I’m starting to panic that once it’s built I’m going to be to close to the ceiling of my wood shelter ?

With that much insulation your oven exterior will be no more than warm to the touch during use.

Managed to build the front arch and get the second ring done tonight. It’s a bit addictive! It is, as I've found!

Managed ring 5&6 tonight! Getting harder too clean and hurting the back leaning over it .

Looks like we're neck and neck. I clean the bricks very soon after laying, but very carefully removing one support at a time, and then replacing. I use a sponge and don't let the mortar go off too much on the brick face. I then remove the temporary wedges, point the gaps and clean again. I dare say as they get near horizontal I'll chicken out a bit! It's looking good though. Very rewarding, isn't it!

I think by building the front arch already is hindering my cleanup! I picked up a gym ball today going to see if that works. I am hoping to close it in this weekend

What a difference having a support makes. I fabbed one up front polystyrene, cardboard, tape and a quiche tin. Shoved some 3x2's underneath and topped with a thin sculpted layer of sand.

Any sort of support makes closing the dome much easier; a common one being a circle of MDF or plywood supported by a car jack, anything that works works!

Looking good. I know what you mean about using a former for the top and then not being as happy with the results as you are when you can see the inside and clean up as you go. I consoled myself with the fact it was structurally sound, pretty round and probably wouldn't be seen again. It just didn't look as neat as the rest or the build had been up till then. I will get onto the front arch tomorrow and the chimney hole. I'm going for a metre section of 6" flue pipe and going to cut slots in the end for about 50mm, bend them over 90 degrees and use that to seat the flue on the arch, over the hole, before building a short bit of chimney. Found a metre of new flue on flea Bay for £15 delivered.

I am only planning on a 1m length of flue but i havent found where to source it from. I was hoping to use twin wall as it would be more weather proof than a single skin. This however means that I would need to have some sort of base plate to connect to but this would also allow me the option of removing it for the winter.
I will be interested to see the final pics of your two builds and see how they compare.
Best of luck Gary

Hi guys, haven’t had a phone or internet for a month or so I haven’t been able to post !! I have finished the dome , put 2 inch of blanket on and rendered! Last night I got the oven up too 350c and the outside was hot to touch? With a infrared temp gun it read 60c ! Is this Normal?
