i have just had a quick measure, and from the current ground level to my elbow is 40cm, so i estimate i would have enough (once i have dug down say 30 cms for a solid level base) height to put a small base ontop of the bottom slab.
I'm 20 odd miles due north of Plymouth and 12 miles East of Lanson ! Hasn't rained for weeks, which is actually quite unusual ...
So i would imagine somewhere not quite as far as Okehampton? Lydford maybe?
and as for rain, we had a bit of drizzle over the fathers day weekend, but other than that not a drop! most unusual! its very nice with a breeze, but on a still day, its far too hot!
devontiger, parts of my grass are looking really bad, I've just dug a pond out and the soil i dug out was so hard, it took some digging! and now I'm trying to move the spoil and its so dusty, its awful!
i have done some measuring now, and i have come up with a plan...
so I'm planning to dig down for the base section, damp proof it however i can (Damp proof membrane around the base and up the sides, a waterproof additive for the concrete if i can find it, and i am also thinking about using one of the paint on waterproofers for the top of the concrete base and the concrete blocks, before finally a damp proof course on top of the block work) and also build a retaining wall in front, something like this:
though i am also thinking about leaving small gaps (say 10 - 12cm) between each block, so i can plant in them to cover up the wall (though i have not done any research to find out how much this will affect to strength of the wall, i suspect it may be ok, but i need to research!).
does anyone have any thoughts on anything else i should consider?
