Hi all I finally finished my oven and now I am thinking about my final plaster layer and paint. Can anyone give me any word of advice on lime plaster (i.e. type, thickness, drying time etc) and a breathable paint such as lime wash. Alternatively, could I paint directly on to the cob layer without render?

First cracks are starting to appear! nothing major but I suspect more might appear when I light it for first time. Any suggestions?

teb, what is that top layer made from? Clay? Looks like there is nothing to hold it together.

Tebano, I have a similar oven (see London newbie in clay / cob threads 2016), but I went for clay then blanket, rather than clay / cob. Long story short, you’re going to get more cracks. Fill in with a slightly watery clay mix, squeeze it all the way in and keep repeating until the cracks stop coming. Good luck!

Hi
Thanks for the advice. The insulation mix is cob (clay+ sand + straw) but perhaps not enough straw. I will try with a wet mix and see how it goes. I've covered with a plastic cover so it dries slowly in this hot weather.

My guess would it would be fine on a cob oven, but want to use sub-base too (K rend product, name may not be spot in). The colour is terracotta. Dave

I've covered with a plastic cover so it dries slowly in this hot weather. I have repaired the cracks with wet mix twice opening the cracks so I could insert more mix. But they keep on appearing, do they eventually settle?
