I'm in the process in planning to build my oven. I made an order for fire bricks and insulation boards and blankets which arrived last week. I have been disapointed with the quality of the fire bricks. I have never used them before and I'm used to the ususal building bricks. The bricks have irreular borders and when laid flat the edges do not sit flush with gaps at either end. They do not have the same thickness resulting in multiple steps which can result in pizza peel catching. The other problem is that there are stains on one side of almost all bricks making apprently caused by the bricks being stacked to dry. I'm really unhappy with the quality of the bricks and would like your thoughts on this. Attached some photos.

If you're unhappy then send them back, although a thickish sand bed and a herringbone pattern would smooth out some of the steps. They are expensive and need to be right.

They do chip fairly easily as they are quite delicate so you can't throw them around. I also found that there were some slight differences in shading but yours do not even sit flat which I don't recall with mine. Am not an expert but maybe an issue with the production? You could see if you could source a couple from elsewhere to compare and/or complain to your supplier. Like I say, I am no expert but my fear would be that if they haven't been made quite properly they may not stand up to what you will be putting them through.
