I've been talking about building a wood fired oven for years. Lockdown has given me the incentive to get on with it. I have put down a deposit for a Milan 750, but I don't expect this to arrive until June. This is my existing rather scrappy bbq area. First job was to dig out the flower bed and demolish the old BBQ.

Building material arrived earlier this week. It was a long job moving this all to the back garden. I have also prepared the base for concrete pouring

Got started on Friday. Fortunately my son was able to borrow a mixer, so the base was relatively easy. My concrete estimating was rubbish and I had to go back to the builders merchant on Saturday to get more ballast. So the base isn't as neat as it could be, but luckily will be hidden when the job is complete.

The rest of the weekend was spent doing some brickwork for the BBQ and the blockwork for the oven. My father in law is probably turning in his grave, but his old saw was perfect for cutting the blocks. By Sunday I had finished the blockwork and made a start on the bbq.

Excellent, Feew of us on here have the milan 750 great oven you wont be disapointed Have fun buiding, any questions just ask away Sean Thanks. Work is progressing well. The last bricklaying I did was in 1986 on a wall about 2ft x 4 ft, so I am reasonably pleased with my efforts so far. I am using the instructions from Pizza Oven Supplies, but I was a bit worried about all of the weight of the oven being balanced on only half of the Celcon block. So as these only cost £1.50 each I am now thinking of adding another course of blocks on either side. So each lintel will be supported on 1.5 blocks width on either side. I would be interested in people's view on this.

The dome of your oven may well exceed 300kgs, if you're comfortable with the thought of that collapsing then crack on, if not add support ! Paranoia rules but better safe than sorry ...

Couldn't agree more. I have now added a second layer of blocks. Less log storage, but less worrying about the whole thing collapsing!

Personally I think 6” hollow blocks are better with at least the corner cores filled, but do what you think you can get away with.

I have now finished my bbq which we used for the first time today. The base for the oven is largely complete. But I am thinking of putting a layer of insulated 4inch blocks on top of the slab to provide insulation and also raise the oven up a little. Just have to wait for my order to be scheduled and delivered.

Have a quick measure because the rule of thumb is that the cooking floor should be around the same height as the elbow of the main user; use blocks to suit.

Good call on the second row of blocks. If I recall from my build then I think that the lintel spec is based on a standard 1200mm but it doesn’t give much ovehang as you rightly say. As it happens I could only get longer ones so cut them down to suit but left them longer than in the instructions. I also corbelled the row of bricks at the back to give more support to the pavers. I do think that a third lintel might have been a better option though in hindsight. I also used 7nm concrete blocks. Only a little more expense than thermalites but seemed sensible, especially if you don’t render the exposed blocks on inside of the wood store. Very easily damaged over time.

I added a third lintel, as at a cost of of about £10 it seemed sensible. I am fairly confident of how strong this is now. I agree about the concrete blocks, but too late now. My oven is being delivered next week, so only a couple of weeks before I am ready to start cooking.

Excellent. Yep. For minimal cost I don’t know why they don’t spec a third lintel. As it happens the £12 ones at Wickes were out of stock for ages so I had no choice but to pay something stupid like £45 each!!!! for slightly longer ones at my local Travis Perkins. Longer was better anyway to my mind but what a ripoff.
Incidentally for anyone reading And considering one of these I spoke to POS last week and they’re working to at least 6 weeks lead time so better get your orders in now.
Won’t affect my build as I have the plans and mine is partly bespoke so I can build the base and the tandoor section in advance so long as the client (my brother) can find the cash for me to crack in with it. Still raising and extending his patio at the moment.
