Hi I'm new on here and almost finished my pizza oven. I've got a 4 inch concrete floor with a mould of the inner oven floor in just not sure what to put down underneath the firebrickS to level them out. I was thinking of just sand but can't see anything about it. Thanks

Dry sand will allow you to 'shuffle' the firebricks to get a level base, and facilitate the removal of any that become damaged in use 👍🏾

Failure to do this will result in the heat conducting straight into the supporting slab resulting in loss of temperature in the cooking floor. The usual insulation is 50mm thick calcium silicate board. It is expensive stuff so a cheaper alternative is a 100mm thick slab of 5:1 vermicrete. Mix by volume of 5 parts vermiculite, 1 part cement powder and 3 parts water. Because the mix uses so much water it needs to be allowed to dry for around 3 weeks before laying the cooking floor over it. Often the floor bricks are not an even thickness so to get them perfectly level a dry mix of 50/50 bricklayers clay and sand can be used. This allows free expansion of individual floor bricks. Any slight gaps between bricks fills with ash.

Hi thanks for the help,I have some perlite left over so I will put that down as opposed to the vermiculite, hopefully should do the same job.
