Hi Folk's Apologies if this has been asked before- (i used the search function but got no results).
I was wondering if storage heater bricks are safe to use for the oven floor? I'm pretty sure they are just the same as normal fire bricks, but the paranoid self in me just wondered if they were the same and didn't actually contain asbestos or some other nasties?
Please advise.
Many thanks, Matt

Yes they are safe and more often than not free or very cheap. All the ones I have seen have a lovely colour and smooth finish, Good luck

I am just about to start my dome using storage heater bricks, but I am plannng on covering the floor with quarry tiles as I am worried that the storage heater bricks might break up a little as the oven gets used. They seem a little bit prone to chipping, at least the ones I have do.

Prior to 1974 asbestos was used extensively in storage radiators so my advice would be to make sure any fire bricks you access come from radiators built after that date. Any radiators prior to that date with asbestos in them should be controlled waste so technically you shouldn't be able to access them legitimately. You never know with E Bay though. You can find a list of model numbers and whether and where the asbestos is located if you search the internet or look for a post I did on the old Forum. Personally I prefer my pizza base to be coated with semolina flour rather than asbestos fibres..........

You can use normal clay housebricks on the dome, these are fired at extreme heat during the manufacturing process, (Don't use Concrete/cement brick) Unless you are the pyromaniac from hell I don;t think there will a problem

As I understand it though, any asbestos would be in the surrounding base in the form of insulating mat and not in the bricks...............therefore the bricks are safe ( as long as they are clean and already removed from the radiator by some other idiot of course)

i used storage heater bricks with no problems, gets you a very good flat floor, if your worried you can always top with quarry tiles, but as h12rpo said the asbestos was used as the insulation around the bricks not in the actual bricks themselves

Hi folks, Im new to this and just starting out on a build. I would be interested to know the outcome of using the storage heater bricks? Did they work OK? I am planning to use firebrick on the floor and storage heater bricks in the dome? Any thoughts?

yes they will work ok, there are couple of builds on here that have used them for the dome if you use the search function you might be able to find them and have a look through them. fire bricks are obviously the best but storage heater bricks will work well too. don't forget the insulation both below the oven floor and around the dome that's one step you do need to get right!

Hi all I am currently creating an outdoor kitchen and was in need of some storage heater bricks for my oven an Argentinian grill. It seems as though at the moment I cannot find any in the West Midlands, even on eBay/gumtree. I don’t suppose anyone has any Spare in or near to the West Midlands by any chance?
