Yes, you might have a point about the price. I think that part of the cost reflects the trouble they've taken with the venue- which is really nice- and there's often live music. It's no more than a curry and only slightly more than local fish and chips, and they do taste great so all in all I don't begrudge the cost.

Went to Ludlow food festival the other weekend and saw some cob ovens there and have decided to build one here at home. I've got the clay, sharp sand, fire bricks and have just finished the base. Hope to get the sand former and maybe the inner clay/sand layer done over the weekend. Any tips or important points to bear in mind would be very welcome. Thanks. The other oven I posted about earlier is going to have to wait as that's located in St Dogmaels, West Wales. Attachments:

Hi dodders, I also went to the Ludlow food festival and that is where i got the idea to build my own oven. Still building the base at the moment. You mentioned that you have sharp sand. Are you using this to mix with the clay to make the cob? I thought that builders sand had to be used, or perhaps it doesn't matter too much.

Hi Matt I've looked at so many websites and you tube vids on how to build a cob oven that I may have got my wires crossed. From memory one of the builds said to use sand with sharp bits of gravel, not rounded gravel hence I'm using sharp sand mixed with clay for the inner 70mm layer and then the same mix (2:1) plus either straw or sawdust for the outer layer. I make alot of sawdust and shavings which is handy but I imagine straw is a stronger mix so I'm not sure yet. Good luck.
