50:50 soft and sharp sand at a 6:1:1 ratio Sand:OPC:Lime should do, from memory. Damp off and keep covered from the sun as much as poss. I've got around curves and angle beads by cutting vees out at set lengths on the internal face.. Like kerf cutting timber.

That sounds like as good a recipe as any to go with. Having thought it through a bit more i am going to do away with the hard edges and soften the design with radiused corners. I was going to put a waterpoofer in the final coat but then are concerned about how i dry it out. The internal heat will tend to drive the moisture to the outside where it cannot escape.
