We used more than 5 of these dumpy buckets heaped full and that still wasn't quite enough.... No sand was added as it was already sandy out of the ground. and this was for a small oven. When we build again it will be with engineering /puddling/pond clay by the ton... nothing worse than running out...

How did you get on with building the dome?....I've just finished a clay oven and I used about ....between 4 and 5 of those dumpy buckets to build a 75cm internal diameter oven (2 x 3" layers).....the sand form is still inside mine...may scrape it out tomorrow.

Hey Terry, do you have pictures? Did you build a brick arch first or complete dome? if you did a complete dome be careful not to go too big too soon when cutting the opening... I found that the sand holds the damp inside so you get drying and shrinkage outside but not inside and that can cause cracking... keep the dome out of the sun...
