Thank you, I will take another pic for you. It still has the chucking point. Dont want to risk using the cole jaws to remove it as the cedar would mark on the buttons

Cheers boss, there is loads of snobary about removing the chucking recess around the woodworking forums. The thing is none of them are ever going to buy a bowl and people who are don't care.

Hi Rich
Great to see you are still churning out those works of art.....love the bowl, and I'm really interested to see what you make out of that beautiful slice of hardwood (on the other thread).
Terry
p.s.....just noticed them nauseating adverts are back...whoops.

Thanks Terry. I have not been turning for a while so it is nice to get the lathe moving again. The chunk in the other thread is the piece that the bowls came from. I can do a work in progress if you are interested.

Rich
A "work in progress"....or a picture diary with comments sounds a brilliant idea. Our members other hobbies are quite varied, that's why I created the "Interests and Hobbies" category. Please feel free to carry on showing us your skills.....I for one am interested in seeing a lump of wood turned into a piece of art.

Right then here goes. As you can see from the pics in the above posts. Get a nice thick plank of Cedar and rough chop into bowl blanks. Blank onto the lathe Turn untill round, this is the most unpleasent stage as bits fly of and it is all a little rough. Shape the outside and turn the chucking recess (this is where you hold the bowl when you reverse it.) Loads of sanding and oil to finish. Put the chuck on the lathe and mount the bowl on the other way round. Fetch out the inside, leaving as much in the centre for as long as possible to keep it stable. All removed but still rough. The photo does not look much different to the last but it has had 4 grades of sand paper thrown at it. Two coats of a food safe oil and a serious buff!!!!!! That is about it, I will go and get a pic of the tools used. This takes about 2 hours give or take. When you are really in the groove and have done a few back to back you can get it down to 1 and1/2. Hope you enjoyed this, I certainly do Rich

A query - how does the lathe "grip" the wood? I don't see any holes/marks on the wood?
