sorry I don't mean to mislead people because I bought half my materials through the jewson account and saved some money.but you need to shop around a bit as prices fluctuate from suppliers. I'm pretty sure kilnlinings are the cheapest for firebrick though unless you are near Bristol where victus sell them and you save on delivery.

Hi all Firstly, thanks Terry for setting this discount up - starting on my first oven now and trying to keep the budget tight as possible; this certainly helps. I've been down to Jewson's Winchester to pick up some vermiculite and cement, and while I was there I got them to bring up our current discount rates for the WOOP248 account: Lime - 39.6% Vermiculite - 40.03% Firebricks - 33.23% Fireclay -33.42% Cement - 39.84% Hope this is helpful! The pre-discount and pre-vat prices were: 100l v4 vermiculite - £14.99 Hydrated lime - £15.94 Fireclay - £28.07 Firebrick - £464 / 100 !! Building sand - £3.49 Mastercrete 25kg - £8.18 With discount I just paid £83 for 5 bags of vermiculite and 5 bags of mastercrete (need some for another project, not doing a 1:1 =D ) I'll no doubt be back asking for advice in no time at all - just about to pour my insulating vermicrete slab this weekend. All the best Dave Brief update for all those wondering about the current state of Jewson discounts on the 'WOOP248' account. Today I went into the Westhampnett (Chichester) branch to purchase 4No. bags of Silvaperl 'V4' vermiculite. Jewson product code for this is "INSVM001" and their list price is £14.99 + VAT each. No problem at all using the WOOP248 account but for some reason the price didn't change when this account reference was entered and the guy said he couldn't view any discount rates for the account on screen? Hence 40% discount off list was certainly not available to me - shame! I did however ask what he could do with the price and was offered £12.95 + VAT each and was fairly happy with that. Total price for the four bags; including the dreaded; was £62.16 so no bad but not quite as cheap as others have experienced from Jewson. Just thought this was worth posting up for the benefit of others.

On the strength of the discount from Jewson and the need to occasionally buy building supplies for my business I decided to open an account with Jewsons.
So I filled in the stuff on the website and it all started.
Then, for the benefit of convenience I thought I would open up a web account so that I could buy on line (because the website wouldn't give me much information about pricing without a web account). I was told to wait for a letter to arrive in the post with a password.
This morning a letter arrived with the password so, excitedly {yes, how sad I am} I logged in and tried to add a few items to my shopping basket just to see what the prices may be like especially with the forum discount code. I was surprised to discover that the website still didn't give me prices - just a semi useless capability to generate a list. I can do that with a scrap of paper and I can do it even more efficiently with a spreadsheet!
Digging around on the web it seems like Jewsons don't provide pricing through their website - everything being a horse trade at the branch. Great!
Now, if I was a volume purchaser and got to know the branch manager that would be one thing {and this is the case in my business dealings with many other types of web based retainers} but to expect to be offered decent prices when I would only go there occasionally is a big ask and is made worse when I have no idea what they are likely to charge until I turn up.
It seems really daft and almost sharp practice on their part in this day and age to operate in this fashion. Have I misunderstood how it works?
If it really is this way, how competitive are they to a low volume purchaser like myself or am I better of going to a local builders merchant or buying through one of the big on line retainers who publish their prices instead.
My local branch is Farnborough in Hampshire - in case anybody has had dealings with them.
Thanks

Hello Purrcat
This Jewson account worked well when it was first set-up. About 3 years ago Jewson changed their pricing format and we lost many of the percentage discounts that was offered to us. I spent a lot of time trying to get back our original discounts but was unsuccessful.(purely due to my local Jewson managers not giving me "time of day") One of our members (I can't remember who) had more time than myself and tried to improve our deal through his local branch in Reddich. The account number has always stayed the same...WOOP 248 and discounts are still available from any branch in the UK. BUT...I'm still not happy with their deal.
Earlier this week (as it happens)I had a meeting with a Jewsons head office chap to try to finalise a deal. There is still a lot of money going through their books from our forum account (tens of 000's) so unless they come up with a really competitive discount scheme for any member of this forum, I shall perhaps look for a better deal from another national building supplier. Another meeting is penciled in for next week.
*** regardless of any discount from Jewsons it is always advisable to get a printed quote of any material list, then shop around to check prices.
*** if you are buying large quantities of any materials I advise you to push your local Jewson manager to offer you a better deal. Even if we get super discount prices....each manager has the scope to lower the prices.
I shall update this thread when I have more details.
Terry

Hi Terry,
thanks for the reply and information. I've actually started to compare and contrast costs from the various retailers - some local and some national with a view to costing out the base for the oven. Ignoring Jewsons for a moment, there are some reasonably competitive prices from the likes of B&Q for aggregate materials even taking delivery into account. Where they fall down is in the supply of bricks but some of the brick supply merchants on the web appear to offer reasonable pricing and loads of choice. Then, on top of that, things like the DPC and the concrete mesh can be purchased from a different source again. Whether Jewsons would off me better pricing, I don't know. The problem is that I doubt that a purchase in the few hundred quid region is going to get the Jewson manager interested unless he is short of his monthly target. Certainly, in my line of business, while a sale is a sale, some almost seem hardly worth the trouble even though the customer has saved for ages to buy a product!
I'm not against negotiating - I do it all the time but from the sales end. I realise that it's a trait of the building industry but, without any idea of prices from Jewson when I walk in the door, I feel in a really disadvantaged position at the outset.
One thing is sure though: the base will be built and it will have a KL Veneto superior mounted on top of it - Liam has been very helpful during the long chat we had on the phone and an order will be placed at the appropriate time.

I'm not sure how long it will take to get Jewsons to sort their act out....soon I hope. After all it's going to benefit them. Liam from Kilnlinings is however a different subject. He is very phone friendly and helpful. His 10% discount on fire-bricks etc has helped many of our members to keep the costs to a minimum. All his products are 1st class and I really like the look of his Veneto superior oven.

I took the plunge:
concrete mesh ordered on the web from a company in Cornwall together with some drainage material and then a load of MOT1, ballast, cement, building and sharp sand, DPC, a lintel and marine ply ordered with my Trade Point trade account and, finally, a cheap gazebo ordered off eBay. I've also put in a request for quote from Brick Express for a pallet of Birtley Olde English Buff and some thermalite blocks for the inner course.
The Vento oven will be ordered as and when I need it.
It may work out more than Jewson - it may not - either way, they wont be getting my business.
Subject to the weather and time, the project will start on Thursday - pictures will be taken as things progress.
This forum has been so incredibly helpful with information - it's an absolute gem!

Hello,
Does anyone know if the Jewson discount still works?
I'm just about to start my build and the discount would help out greatly.
Or anyone know the best place to get FireBricks from?
Thank You,

Myself and Jon (jotta112233) attended a meeting on 29th April 2010 with Mr. Gareth Owens of the Newport branch of Jewson's. A list was given to him as a general list of items that may be needed in a wood-oven build.( taken from the members who have posted on this site) There is no commercial gain in this for myself but Mr Owens was asked if he could give our members favourable prices in any branch of the UK. He came up with a general discount of...... -74% off list price for timber and plywood -50% off....Fire-bricks and fire-clay -40% off....Building materials -30% off....tool hire -10% off....hand tools These are only the main categories and hundreds of items fall into any of these 5 categories. Even with the % discounts it doesn't guarantee the cheapest prices so please shop around. These discounts are available at any Jewson outlet in the UK....only to members of our forum. To use the forum account quote "Wood and pizza oven UK forum" and the account number.......WOOP 248 ............................................................................................. The above has been copied from the old forum. The account is still open and since it's creation has been used by many people in all corners of the UK. The general feedback from members using this facility has been very positive. A written quote with the discounted prices on it will be given upon request (you can then check the prices with other builders merchants) The only negative feedback is from people who have experienced unhelpful staff at their local branch.... Terry . Is this still active???
