Damp

Hi chaps, after the terrible weather we've had lately, today looks like a spring day so I'm firing up the bad boy for the first time in 2013. However on a close inspection I seem to have damp developing in the legs. the paint is flaking off in lots of places and in one area has taken a piece of render with it. The dome is fine. I've got a DPC in the top and bottom slabs, however for some reason I completely forgot to put one in on top of the first row of breeze blocks My side table which I did put a DPC on the breeze blocks seems fine. Has anyone got any advice on how I can stop the damp, is it because I have rendered to the floor ? Attachments:

That looks more like frost damage to me Leeb.
I'd let it run its course until spring, wire brush it back, repair the render and re-paint.
Outside stuff always ends up with a little "patina" and weathering. Its part of the deal really.

Thats good news, I'll get onto that in March. Obviously the Whethershield paint isn't up to the job.

It also looks like frost damage to me. Sounds like the surface wasn't keyed/prepped enough when the paint ...or render was put on. Check the area's above where the render has cracked. Even the smallest of holes or cracks will pull the water in through capillary action....
Don't forget to go slowly, slowly with your first few fires of the season as there will be a lot of damp in the dome which needs slowly pushing back out.

Thanks Terry, yeah I did a long slow fire building it hotter through the day. Everything seems fine with the dome. I don't remember doing much keying for the paint maybe that hasn't helped Lee

ahh damp curing fires, I think my oven is going to weep it has collected so much water over winter.
When will spring start in earnest, I am bored of these grey wet days now....
glad everyone seems to be in agreement its frost not damp. How are you supposed to prep for painting, I have not painted my base but I do need to repaint a window cill but I suspect the process is the same?
