Hi, The hardstanding is in place, the concrete blocks ordered...everything else is work in progress! Hoping to create a hybrid oven using a gym ball to mould a shallow dome sitting on a ring of firebricks. Look forward to your insight and ideas!

G'day Seen the gym ball used a few times. You got to watch the pressure. To Much will give you the "pin head" shape. To Little pressure the more bricks you add the ball starts to sag and move under the weight. Check out the pressure you require to give you the correct size and see what you think. Regards dave

Thanks Dave, good tip! I was originally thinking of casting a dome onto the ball in castable refractory / firebrick grog/ clay but not a full semi circle, more shallow and then placing it onto a ring of soldier bricks. Having read lots more I'm worried about the weight pushing the ring out, so maybe I'll go for the full dome on the ball. Any advise on the mix? I figured the addition of a course firebrick grog would help with the refractory qualities of the inner dome and help prevent cracks?

G'day A soldier course is not a worry my brick oven has one and its 6 years old now. However cracking between the brick and the caste dome is going to happen. Weather this is a problem ? Back to the ball as a mold. Usually they are used to close a brick dome in the last couple of rings. Even with only a small amount of material there can still be problems in it distorting. I don't believe a gym ball will be able to support the weight without distorting. I would build a Sand mold and dig the sand out later. Blow the ball to the size you require then sit a small child on it and see what happens. Regards dave
