.......just a thought. Do not leave the tarp on your oven. you already have a gazebo so just protect the oven from the side where the rain drives in. As soon as you can start lighting those curing fires....even if it's a bit of the oven at a time like my previous post.
Once you remove the sand.......however slowly and gradual, you can start putting regular curing fires into the oven. The more you do this, the more the clay will dry out and form it's own dry form.
The finished clay oven always needs some sort of protection from the elements, but I hope your oven Mark 2 will work out. The more you use these clay beauties....the more robust they come.

Ok, loads to update on.. Blog updated is easiest way.. Had a bit of cracking on the top entrance to the oven, but did some good repairs. Now need some dry weather to get some more fires and then the insulation layer can go on..

Hi David,
Im hoping to start one next year and have loved reading youre blog, did you need all that sand on the tarp for the inner oven alone, how much sand was that?

I'm really gutted to hear that you've had another collapse.
I hope to be doing a lot more clay ovens in 2013, but so far I've only done a couple. I build a brick arch first, then mold the clay around and on top of the arch....I've had cracking but nothing too severe. You seem to build the clay dome first then build an arch after. I have a feeling that the area between the arch and dome has the weakness. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on your latest set back.

Swatson - hi yeah it was 8 buckets (ie standard builder bucket) sand and 4 clay so 2 to 1 I believe, I've been following instructions from river cottage bread book and I also went on a course down there as well. Terry - thanks for that unfortunately it wasn't at the front it was the back left that collapsed this time, the weather has been so bad I've not been able to get the heat into the oven I would have wanted to.. I'm updating the blog today wight the collapse pics. 😢
