So I've just transplanted the seedlings to bigger pots with vegetable compost rather than seeding compost: And these are the varieties I have with the packet instructions: Terry you're welcome to some, just drop me a PM with your details and what you'd like. We've already used 12 San Marzanos so I'm down to roughly 20 and I've been advised that If you want to end up with 1 plant then plant 2 seeds, if you want two then plant 4 etc as they seeds don't always come up properly. JK Anyone's welcome to some seeds

Ok, you have inspired me! Out with the propogator ! Have some seeds left over from last year. Just found a 6 x 3 m cheap polytunnel on ebay as we had a very poor result with the outside toms last year.

Good man Muddy! lol.
I would say come to me for advice but I know nothing, so good luck!
JK.
Edit: Just to jump a little further ahead, the only containment I have room for outside is a single grow bag, so 3 plants max! My setup outside is a grow bag, a £10 ebay 'grow bag greenhouse' (actually surprisingly good quality) and a 10L irrigation system (not necessary, but I am very absent-minded!). I may also try a couple of plants of the more resilient varieties and plant them straight out when ready if it looks like we'll be having a good summer?!?!?! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Be careful when using recycled seeds, it they are f hybrids then you will not get the original tomato type as they have been cross bred with another variety and on the second generation it will revert back to one of the original which may be a bit crap. I have grown a lot of sungold from a seed packetand are the best for taste but when I have reused the seeds I do not get a sungold,
try it or google it you will see what I mean.
PS, F hybrids are good but cost more per seed.

3 1/2 Months later! lol Long story short, the San Marzanos weren't all that healthy, papery/pale growth throughout, so I took the plunge and 'culled' all but the healthiest plant, then in an act of desperation popped out to Homebase on a 20% off weekend and picked up 3 more plants (for £4 the lot!), a tumbler, a shirley and a mini italian plumb to make up the numbers. I'm glad to say that with considerable guidance from my gardening buddy there's a bumper crop on the way! The 1 remaining San Marzano has flowered and is now bearing some fruit, but it's far less than a plant of that size should so I'm glad we took the decision to loose the rest. As for the Homebase plants, they're doing really well, good strong plants when I bought them and absolutely shot up once re-planted and given some personal TLC. A real-life San Marzano in the making, lol: Shirleys, looking really healthy: And finally the mini plumbs, this plant has exploded with fruit, as has the tumbler (no pics): JK

Just took delivery of 2x500g packs of fresh San Marzano Tomatoes from Ocado. They also do Nduja from the same company and i got 7 packs of that which you can freeze. Nduja is a spicy spreadable Italian sausage made with pork which is great on a pizza or in a pasta sauce. I thought Ocado just delivered for Waitrose but they sourse and supply also. Attachments:

I was down in the South West this week and picked up 3 good healthy looking San Marzano plants about 12inch tall from a garden centre on the A38 just south of Taunton, think it was called Willowbrook. £1.10 each or 3 for £3.00. Looking forward to growing my own!
