Hi this is my first post here. I am English living in Bulgaria. In our village there are a number of old and unused traditional barrel vaulted ovens, but I am interested in building a clay oven, partly because I have already built a strawbale and clay house so I know the techniques. But I have been looking for years for any infomation on using stone for the floor. Has anyone looked into what kind of stone might work instead of firebrick? Surely they must have used stone in the past? Round here I can get marble, gneiss, granite, are any of them any good for the floor? I am surrounded by stone quarries. If it is a no-no, then I can get firebrick so no worries, I am just curious....
If I get the chance I could take some photos of the old ovens here, if anyone would like them?

Hello Lily.....welcome to the forum. In preference I use fire-bricks.....next best...storage heater fire-bricks, next...clay pavers or clay bricks. We have a thread at the moment about people using granite... ukwoodfiredovenforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ukwfoforum&action=display&thread=1098 I hope you get a bit more feedback on your question. Terry p.s...the "search" facility is very good for finding things on the forum (at the top of each page next to the blue question mark)...simply type in a keyword and press enter. It will give you posts to do with the keyword.
