ah thanks danno thought you had to add them one by one! there shouldn't be much foam on the bricks maybe just abit that escaped out of the bottom around the last course when i put the forms in. then i let it all set and cut it to the dome shape before carrying on tonight. but yea it will just scrape of or burn off later! got the dome finished tonight got a couple of pics . . pretty chuffed right now! one thing i forgot to get a picture of which i wish i had was the keystone . . or sort of two keystones!! how you shaped your bricks danno then glued them together and put it in, i just shaped two half bricks then sat them in the gap and filled the joints all around them with the lime mortar same difference i think/hope!! anyway i'll find out tomorrow when i take the forms out!! keith Attachments:

thanks reburner! took the forms out this morning before work, had to tidy up inside a bit and pointed a few joints up but reasonably pleased with the dome, well for a first attempt anyway! gonna leave it to set up for a few days now before maybe starting a few small curing fires from sat onwards! hopefully it might stay dry for the next few weeks so i can get it cured then get the insulation on and rendered up! Kieth Pictures coming through load and clear. I like your dome. Many people opt for 2 interlocking bricks for the top capstone. You've done a good job of cleaning the interior...sometimes when the forms are left too long it becomes a nightmare to clean the inside. Have you seen this thread for uploading multiple pictures in the same post... ukwoodfiredovenforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=uploadingimages Terry

Thanks terry! Yea I need to try and give the lower bricks a good clean up too or will these simply burn clean? A lot of it is old lime mortar it should come off fairly easily anyhow!

Ha yea I do exactly the same thing! I'm itching to get it insulated now and sealed up, I'm hoping for a good week next week so I can get some curing fires in and maybe get it insulated and sealed up the weekend after. I'm seriously considering just using blanket and rockwool insulation over the dome, then meshing and a few really good thick coats of render. My thinking is vermicrete holds masses of water which will take forever to cure after applying which in turn will prohibit me from applying the final coat of render and fully sealing her up, also if I just use 'dry' insulation it will be cured and ready to go as soon as its rendered I think. That and I think the vermi will be a nightmare to apply! Any thoughts on this?

Hmmm yea I do wonder if I should go that way but I don't see any reason either not too! And I would think that blanket or rockwool are better insulators anyway? The only one I've seen is cobbler Dave on FB he was going to use Crete but had a nightmare and scrapped it, used CB then rockwool without any issues I'm aware of! I don't know yet just think it will save a massive amount of work and hassle!

Rockwool.....eh...that's got me thinking, I've got a spare roll in the shed from when I did my loft.....is this ok to use (thinking layers of ceramic blanket, tinfoil, rockwool, tinfoil, chicken wire then render) - not tried and tested but someone's gotta try it (thinking it may be me if I can get my firebricks sorted)
Good luck

Hi ringo
I've spoke to rockwool and apparently normal rockwool loft roll wouldn't be suitable for our needs. It's low density and once the binders have burnt out I was told it would just basically turn to dust! I don't know what temp this would happen at. That said on another rockwool data sheet I read that all roxkwool products are certified to 1000 degrees! but it would be a risk to use it. Rockwool do a couple of products suitable one called industrial Matt and one called fire barrier which I am going to use I think. (2 inch ceramic, 2 inch rockwool) I may then use up some normal rockwool I have because by that point it shouldn't be getting that hot hopefully! On the other foot cobbler Dave over on fprno bravo used normal rockwool and had no problems! Does make me wonder if there just trying to sell a more expensive product! Could we do some sort of test I wonder?

From what i could find out, when i was researching, was that Rockwool is a better insulator, but it just can't handle the anticipated temps. Its very soft, which actually makes it more awkward to handle than CB. Keith, i found an Ebay page for a company in Wales who was selling off Fire Barrier Rolls. From what i could see, the chicken wire was a little rusty, and that was it. Courier rate, was about a tenner (from memory), which i arranged myself through ParcelMonkey. ukwoodfiredovenforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=membersbuyandsell&action=display&thread=434
