Yea mine aren't perfect but there not too bad! I've been looking for some quarry tiles but not sure which one will be ok. Do they have to be unglazed and clay or is porcelain ok? Could someone put a link up to some that would be suitable?

Been down to topps tiles and picked up some quarry tile! 27 per sq/m seen them much cheaper online but with delivery were coming out around the same price so its not too bad!

Hi Keith, i only consider Quarry Tiles as the deep brown or red matt 4" or 6" by 1/2" Tiles. I have since seen some more like Norfolk Clay Pamments, about 8" square and 1" thick. Quarry Tiles are Rock hard, and well fired. Sort of the Tile equivalent of an Engineering Brick. Dennis Ruabon from Wales used to be considered some of the best.

If you want to give yourself some reassurance before you fit them take a blow torch to one of them or stick it over a gas hob and get it hot until it almost glows. You should find that they change colour very slightly but are unaffected otherwise.

Ah good idea I shall try that before I bed them in, I'm hoping there ok as I want to crack on this weekend hopefully and I've cut them all to the template now! I'm thinking I'm just going to lay them on a good bed and butt them up tight no joints inbetween them my thinking being this will allow for any expansion there may be? Anyone think I should avoid doing this and leave joints before I set too and bed them?

well . . . just put a blowtorch to the so called 'unglazed clay' quarry tile and after about 30 seconds it snapped clean in 2. pretty annoyed right now! can't even take them back now as ive cut a few of them to my oven template. i suppose its lucky i tested them it would have been a disaster if they all failed when the oven was finished!!

Hmmm sorry to hear you've had a problem! Did they flake at all or did it just break?
The floor of my oven has quarry tiles from B&Q - they have lasted well so far and passed the blowtorch test.

Keith What a setback!. If you need just a thin layer of hearth you may have to bite the bullet and buy some thin fire-bricks. If kilnlinings are too far away, you could try these people.....they're in Sheffield.... .. www.sterlingcommodities.co.uk/firebrick_ovens.html. Looking at the map Liam (kilnlinings) is not that far from you. He's in Dronfield Derbyshire ( S18 8PL)....his fire-bricks are very competative i price and he stocks all sizes....and gives forum members 10&% discount ...... I'm just mentioning this as you must be frustrated with the tiles are are probably itching to carry on with your oven. Terry

Just broke clean in 2. Its just annoying as I asked the guy on the phone that they were definatly clay traditional quarry tile and he assured me they were, I got someone who was in town to pick them up for me and it turns out I think they are ceramic or porcelain imitation quar a blowtorchry tile as there only 9mm thick. I think I'm going to take myself out this morning armed with the blowtorch and try and find the real deal!
Terry it's not that I need a thin layer It was just to tidy up the oven floor ontop of the storage heater blocks. But I don't see any reason why I couldn't cook straight on to them if I had too theres just a few corners off some if then but I could just point the. Up flush and carry on hmmmm!

Kieth
Your absolutely correct in saying you can cook directly on top of the storage heater tiles. Firing the oven up soon sterilizes them. Ash from the initial curing fires will fill up any gaps between them, and after continual firings that ash will compact itself between those gaps.
If you were any closer to me,(Newport S.Wales) I could offer you (as in "give") enough of the "Ruaben" clay pavers Bookemdanno was talking about to cover that area (I had a few hundred left over from a large driveway contract)...I've already had 2 members from the forum come to "mine" and half filled their boot with them.....(payment/gesture was always in a gift of cans of bow).
It must be annoying for you with this setback......and it's also frustrating for me as...even if I haven't the time to post reply's to all oven builds in progress, I always try to keep up to date and follow all ongoing builds. It always gives me a good "buzz" when I see members ovens come into fruition and they finally get to reap the rewards of all their hard work.

Hi terry, Thanks for the reply and kind offer! Unfortunately it is a bit far or that would have been great I have decided like you say to cook straight on the heater bricks and in the landing area cut a thermalite down and allow space to tile this area up to the level of the heater bricks it's abit of a compromise but it should be ok this way! Today I have got another course round and tackled the dome to arch cuts I think it's gone ok ish!! I'm off to light the bbq now and crack a can of cidre now so I'll put some pics up later too see what you all think!

pictures of the arch to dome, it wasn't as bad as i thought! angled the back of the arch off and cut a brick on either side of the arch triangular shaped to let it in to the arch as well. i think if i was to do it again i would probably use slightly longer bricks at the top of the doorway arch as i ended up having to mortar abit in the middle as it didn't quite reach the arch on the line determined by the indispensible tool if that makes sense! i heard some people get abit egg shaped at this point i presume this is for a similar reason? the next chain will come round now and sit on the arch too. does it look ok to everyone how i've gone about this bit of the build? Yep, you can just keep adding those box thingys! All looks fine to me Keith, well done! I winced when i first saw the foam, but i suppose it'll just burn off the bricks later on. plenty of energy boosting snacks there too!
