thank all, danno i had a look on that site but doesn't look like they have any at the mo i'll give them a ring monday morning to be sure. a little more progress and got my hands on a flue for the top. what do you think? ( be honest . . i didn't pay for it so its not the end of the world if its not suitable!!) the one thing i was thinking was the wind may blow in and cause a down draft but i could easily get one of those metal cone shaped tops to stop that! Ha! Not the most attractive flue but it was free and that works for me! been thinking about the ceramic blanket. How do you attach it to the dome to keep it in place? An when I mesh over it how do I hold that down before rendering on to it? Anybody have any good methods?

You can tighten the mesh up over your insulation by twisting parts of it with a pair of pliers - you can go to the sections that look a bit baggy and give them a twist - hey presto - not so baggy anymore. It doesn't need to be perfect assuming you're putting a thick layer of vermicrete over it. I can see it being much more important if you're rendering directly over the blanket.

got the flue set in place now. i shuttered the gap in between my front and back arch and filled with a mix of sharp sand vermiculite lime and cement angled into the flue. Attachments:

tonight i have insulated the dome, not as bad as i thought it was going to be! i ended up cutting triangles out and the pinning back together with bits of wire, worked rather well! ive got 4 inch of ceramic blanket, the last layer is abit patchwork in places and i had to use a little bit of rockwool to finish off as i had used every scrap of the CB! next step is mesh it over then get a render coat slapped on! went to the builders supply today and got a roll of chicken wire. i thought this would be easier to use on the dome than the proper expanding metal, however the exp metal is thicker gauge so the render has more to get hold of so to speak so i may now go back and get some of that instead! what mesh did others use and did it work ok? keith Attachments:

Hi Keith, we insulated with 4" ceramic blanket, 2 layers of 2" blanket, and then rendered using the render sold by Kiln Linings. We held the ceramic blanket down with chicken wire from the garden centre and then added a loose layer of chicken wire so there was a little gap between the insulation and the chicken wire, then we applied 2 layers of render. It was all surprisingly easy and my husband and teenage daughter completed all the render in about 2 hours. Here are some pictures Dome with insulation and chicken wire First coat of render and second coat going on Finished with 2 coats of render We had done lots of curing fires before we put on the insulation so I was able to do my first bread bake the day after we put on the render and we had a pizza party the following weekend. The insulation is excellent even after a couple of hours at pizza temp the exterior of the dome is cool. Good luck with the rest of your build. LS

Hi Keith Dome looks great, have you started a fire yet??? A friend of mine cut some old granite worktop with an angle grinder when he was building a WFO so it should be possible. If you want to post more than 1 photo at a time they need to be on the web. I load mine onto Flickr then put the URL from Flickr in between the . Hope that helps. LS
