Dunnes Love the pizzas on your previous post. Tiling is a good idea but I would make sure you use the flexible floor tiling adhesive for an oven. If you want a continuous render flow from the oven to the base walls I would use "render beads" . you can fix these to the top and bottom sections of the actual "slab" You can then do the render in stages.....dome to top edge of slab, then supporting walls to the the underside of the slab....and render the middle bit when you want. If you know a bricklayer or a plasterer ask their advice as they can advise you best. Terry Attachments:

I was originally planning on tiling the sides but then thought it may look better all rendered. You`re right though I think I will just render up to point a... The top of the thermalites and tile the side, another skill to learn, expect more question shortly!!!!!!
That's for the input and I hope you enjoyed the detailed sketch!!!! Pictures to follow as long as the weather behaves tomorrow

good luck with rendering today - weather is set to be bad tomorrow so hopefully you can get most of it done today. Terry makes a good point about tile adhesive - I used mortar and not sure its going to stand up to the weather and heat - may find that my tiles drop off !
I havent yet rendered my base and intend to use render beads. I think I will get my stuff from Milfords on Cardigan Road - good prices.
cheers Pete

Got the scratch coat done today used a mix of 4:1:1 and there seems to be some cracking, is this to be expected? If so I guess it will happen on the next coat and will just have to fill before its painted.
Will have to do the next coat midweek when there is a break in the weather. Party next sat so pressure is on!!!

try to keep it covered and dampened down every so often to help it cure slowly if you can. will help minimise cracking
fine / small cracks can be covered with the weathershield or storrmsheild etc paint.

Cheers Pete will do that on the next course, which is the most important after all!! The sun was out when I was doing it which may have caused the problem, was covered later in the day but will need to damp down.

Has anyone else tried rendering in the dark? Not an easy job!!
As always I started later than hoped and the job too longer than expected. Got the second layer done in daylight but had to smooth under torch light, which may mean that it looks a little more rustic than hoped.
Not too worried, I'm sure it will look great when painted white.
PS 7.5 litre of sandtex white masonry (breathable) paint on offer at £19.99 in homebase, same price as 2.5 litre

Managed to get the oven painted last night, got quite lucky with the rain i think as it gave me chance to paint nad dry a little before i put it under cover again.
Didnt get any pictures as once again i finished it off in the dark and i think it needs some nice sunlight to show off how white it is. Looks exceptional to me though!!!! Might try and get a second coat on tonight to enure it's as white as possible.

ok so managed to get the pizza oven rendered and painted before the party yesterday... might give it another coat midweek to make sure its whiter than white. Also had the first pizza party for my sons first birthday. All went very well trained a fireman and his son how to use the oven which meant that i could prepare the pizzas. Worked very well sending them off with a pizza while i made the next one. Unfortunately didnt take too much advice from the pizza party management thread as it worked very well. Made a number of garlic bread/ plain pizzas before letting the floor heat up again and let anyone who wanted to make their own. Everyone had a great time and even fed some of the neighbors (again). Spoke to my problem neighbor again and one i explained i had a weed wand to help with the lighting of the fire (which works very well) they seemed quite happy that a) i had told them when they had washing out and b) that i invited them round for pizza. Think the wife was happier than the husband anyway.... Also did some nutella and strawberry sweet pizzas at the end.... fantastic!!!

Dunnes
Oven looks great!!!....those pizzas both, the before and after shots look really good.
Don't forget that the oven will continue to be more efficient, the more you use it...up till about the 4th or 5th full firing. By that time ALL the moisture will be gone from the oven and heat times will be more consistent. Trial and error will also play a great part in improving your knowledge and ability. I now always use a seconds/minute timer set to 50 seconds every time I bake pizza. Take your eye off the pizza at a crucial time and you end with a popadom type of pizza.
I like the sound of nutella and strawberry pizza. I usually end a pizza party with nutella and banana calzone's, dusted with icing sugar. However full people are after the pizza party, the guests always make room for a slice of sweet pizza.
Terry
p.s.....great pictures of the build, and party pics. Thanks for sharing this with us. It always gives me a great buzz when I see a build come into fruition.....and also gives newcomers to the forum that little bit of a push from thinking about building their own bread oven...to actually starting their own build.....nice one!!

The posting in this thread isn't over as I still need to do a bit on the tiling, door and maybe some sort of winter cover. But after the last post I would like to thank you and all others that have offered advice and guidance over the past months. Especially terry for the forum existing in the first place, without which my oven definitely would not exist, most likely that is tried and failed badly and given up. The support and encouragement from people like terry, petec to name a few was invaluable and has made me a fantastic oven which surprises me everytime I use it and make any amendments. Sometimes I find myself going over and over the photos admiring what I have achieved. Especially when I've never done any building before. I think I now have every type of sand available in my garage!!!
So thank you one and all for helping me to achieve an amazing structure that creates amazing pizza.
I don't think that I can offer too much advice on building but will hopefully help with offers and where to buy brands cheaper. Terry maybe you could create a "where to buy ingredients cheap" which I can be very helpful with, always looking out for voucher codes etc

Dunnes, its such a buzz to see everyone have a go, achieve their goal, and enjoy the fruits of what is quite a bit of labour. But you do get back much more in fun, and sense of achievement than the sweat you have to put in. I personally get almost the same level of thrill as i had building my own oven, by helping any who ask for it, with whatever i can in reply and helping them cross the line. You now have experience enough to be able to help another too, and the more we grow in number, the stronger we get. So keep popping in and being part of the community on here. This here forum is such a great place for all things Wood fired, and so it should only go from strength to strength as its more than just an oven building resource. Those pictures you posted gave me such a glow, with the action shots of the party taking me back to the last time we had family over for a "do". Thanks for posting!

Dunnes Many thanks for the kind words......I never tire of receiving those..."kind words"!! Terry maybe you could create a "where to buy ingredients cheap" which I can be very helpful with, always looking out for voucher codes etc Good idea and something I/we (myself,Mods, members) should do in the near future. The forum has quite a lot of "clout" in that direction. My problem is having the time to visit companies and thrash out a good trade deal for forum members. I need to arrange a meeting with Jewsons to re-figure our discount account with them....unfortunately they are just waiting on me to arrange this. The same is with a national Ceramic tile and adhesive company.....I've been offered something like 20 or 30% off normal prices through our own forum account...just need the time to arrange a meet and thrash that deal out. I also get lots of offers from companies who offer % discounts on their products, but mostly they are not in our little field. I've had a couple of offers from Pizza peel and outdoor accessory sites, but their offers weren't inviting enough.....the outdoor cooking accessory company I want to bring on board ....hasn't even answered my e-mails. Last week I received a tempting offer (the 3rd from different companies in mainland Europe) to be the sole supplier and distributor of a Modular oven range.....far too complicated for me to consider at the moment....oh dear, I'm rabbiting on a bit. Anyway....good idea and the forum has the clout and following for a niche forum (we're just under 50.000 clicks per month and the old forum gets about the same) to get good deals for forum members. Your suggestion has been taken on board....to be continued.... Terry

You seem to all have had a whale of a time Dunnes, am really chuffed for you that it all went so well. The oven looks absolutely fab, you've done a great job there. Only thing is where is our slice of the pizza? Ha ha ha. Pics are great, thank you for sharing them.

Really wish I had taken more pictures, but I seemed so busy I nearly missed out on eating any pizza as it was!! The nutella and strawberry was the most surprising pizza, the chocolate started to set and dried but the strawberries were very juicy when cooked and added more than enough moisture.
One other to recommend is a spicy pizza with harissa paste replacing the tomato sauce and adding plenty of chilli's, pepperoni, peppers and ham. Very tasty and not too spicy.
Now that the oven is nearly finished my mind is going into overdrive with ideas, some will be shared at a later date.... Although I'm that excited that later date maybe tomorrow!!
