Terry - responding to your other thread, which I can't seem to respond to. Quoted below:
First and foremost, thank you for hosting forum - but you've made a crucial assumption there; that I made any money from the map...
The site the map is hosted on was found from a google search, given that google have removed their free shared mapping system which they used to have.
I am in no way related to communitywalk, and make no money from using their map - I merely used that site as it was free to set up a shared map. There is an option to remove the ads, but that requires paying - and to be honest, I wasn't willing to pay for that...
To be honest - it is slightly offensive that you accuse me of "going through back doors" when all I did was take an idea, do some research on google, and set up an open/free account on another site that helps members here...
Apologies if I stepped on any toes - but please do not accuse me of things that I have not done.
M.

Terry - is there a way we could still do something like this but with it being controlled from your site ? we all appreciate the effort you put into this forum and website - and if it wasn't for this, most of us wouldn't even have our ovens - so we owe you a big debt of gratitude for that. OK chaps...here's my thoughts......
I was a bit peeved off that someone created a map that would take our members to a private site. On this site, the first thing I saw was a block ad for Google ad words and adsense. I migrated to Proboards forum from Forumup ...forum provider because these ads are intrusive and CAN contaminate your own PC. The migration from one forum provider to another (without a "back up") took months of hard work......I done this purely so as my members wouldn't have to see ads appearing on every post and words underlined, which when you passed the curser over them, they would block your screen with whatever?.
I then clicked on the "flags" of locations. This also has a big ad attached DONATE YOUR BIRTHDAY TO CHARITY.....it may be a good cause but it's...advertising. And it's in your face advertising.
Just giving your general location is a good thing....but there wasn't even a link back to this site to be able to see some "nitty gritty" stage photo's etc.......It was a good idea but badly thought out......I didn't even see 1 oven!!
Also the way it was done was simply not protocol.....If this was any other forum that had a moderate following and someone tried to draw this forums members away to a members own PRIVATE GOOGLE AD RELATED FORUM..the member would be banned along with his I.P address.
I will always ...and do....help anybody within this field to promote their own mobile wood-fired oven or book ..or bread making courses as I love to spread the word to my members.
I also created a "GOOGLE MAP" on my old forum for modular oven suppliers etc.....but this was a GOOGLE MAP....from Google ....NOT a private website....with in your face ads using a google map.
Apologies for not allowing this map to go on behind me and my moderators back. You can of course continue with the map but please don't assume you can jump on the bandwagon of 5 years hard work of creating a community to just use members (and their e-mail addresses) (which I sacredly respect) to use on a private site. I won't allow it........pure and simple.

Terry - Thanks for the openness.
Agreed on the linkback and on how annoying google ads are - but as I don't own the other site (as I've said, I merely opened a free account there to create a map) I'm not sure what your reference to a private "forum" is. I've had a look around their main site (which out of respect I'm not mentioning) - but can't find any forums, just lots of maps created by people.
In the interest of moving forward - do you know of a way to do this without the adverts (and without paying them) or better, without relying on another site to do it?

Spinal
Apologies for the rant.....sorry!!...there...I've said it now.
It was...and is a brilliant idea. When I clicked on your link for the map, I just got a bit dilutioned with what i saw. I not very well up on computer literacy but I know you can make a map..direct with google maps, where the you can change the icons to a smaller version so as it's easier to click on a builds location and.......have a feed to whatever the oven builder wants to include.i.e....GENERAL location, oven type, couple of pics....links back to the forum maybe?
I would truly appreciate it if you could create this for us. You would be invited to join us as staff to be able to implement this yourself. It would also need a lot of moderation which you seem the best to control. The direct google map might come with it's own "bloody ads" but this I can tolerate.....food for thought!
Terry
n.b....There seems to be also a lot of interest with "flour"..lately, which I haven't the experience to even be able to comment on due to lack of experience. We haven't a special section of flour, but I think we need one....

What a minefield it all is! At least your clued up enough on the web literacy to see the potential pitfalls Terry! It is a fantastic idea Spinal, and would be a unique trait of this forum, with Terrys ideas and approvals. I really do wholeheartedly agree with his principle of Ad free Forum life too, and Terrys passion to preserve it. I will remove my marker from the previous map, and look forward to our own version in the future. Onwards and upwards!!!

Terry - as mentioned in the pm, No hard feelings. I find your dedication to the forum very admirable. Quite happy to help if you need a hand but I must confess that I have no idea how to create a google map! I'll have to do some reading of the google help files... there's something to do tomorrow I'll let you know when I figure it out... M.

Glad this is all cleared up guys! As had already been established I don't think any harm was meant just a misunderstanding! It really is a good idea though and as terry mentioned pics of the ovens and links to the builds would be good along with pics of the restaurants and maybe links to trip advisor and or menus? We could add tags to nice pubs servng real ale and the like around the country or peoples favorite eating haunts etc and build up a great collection of reccomended places for people visiting various parts of the country, the possibilitys are endless and all on the reccomendation of forum members! Exciting times ahead!

I'm also glad it's cleared up, and tidily too. Onwards and upwards. Looking forward to seeing what comes out of it!
Have a good weekend all, and I hope it's good weather for WFOs where you all are.

Terry, You need a google account. Go to maps. Click: My places Under create map click on: 'or create with classic maps' Stick a title in and a description Zoom into your nearest town, then click on the ballon marker (top left) and put it on your town. I wouldn't recommend putting it on your house for security reasons. A box will pop up, put your oven description in the title, if you want a pic click on Rich text and then the image link will appear at the end of the row. You need your image hosted somewhere. You can type a decription too if you like and also make a link to the forum (your build) Decide if you want it public or unlisted (just shared with people 'you' want) by ticking the appropriate box on the left. Then click collaborate, invite your mods and tick collaborators can invite others. A member just needs to ask one of you lot for an invite then and they can add their own oven. Example: maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=207565016882995879982.0004e4b33d94e0924d40d&msa=0You can click on the icons on the map or the list on the left to bring up the pics / details. Hope this helps...
