Hello there all you lovely WFO folk... I've finally broke some ground today... Been researching a fair bit on here, and printed off the Forno Bravo Pompeii document to have to hand but I still feel like I'm biting off more than I can chew! So my base / hole is 1525mm square and I'm hoping to get to a 34" Pompeii. Does this sound feasible? I've done a few calculations allowing for insulation etc. 4½" Brick 2" Blankety Blanket 4" Vermesnot 2" Render / Possibly K-rend?? and finally a 1" layer of brick slip. I'm going for block base with a single skin brick face. Any comments, hints, tips, general points in the right direction most gratefully received... Chris.

Yep,
by my calcs you have just the right size to do this in....with a bit of tolerance on your 2" render layer - maybe make it 1.5inches thick.
Good luck. Petec

Hi Chris! Sounds like you've made a perfect start. Like Pete says, you'll be fine there and you've a bit of slack in the calcs too. Just remember you need to double up on all the wall thickenesses and add them to the internal oven diameter to give you the overall finished diameter. If you're going for a brick slip final layer, you could potentially do away with the 2" render and go straight onto the vermicrete anyway. Maybe a thin sand and cement render if the vermin doesn't go too smoothly. I doubt you'd need K-rend, if you're going to cover it all up. I always like to finsh a concrete pad height below finished ground level, so that you can blend it all away with whatever floor finish you decide. Its a bit of a pet hate of mine to see concrete pads. It usually means a bit more digging, and a course of bricks extra, but i just think it looks so much better. The FB plans were so helpful to me too, but i just couldn't live with the nuclear bunker structure, so i went "off piste" for my base design. My old Landscaper head again! Anything goes, so long as you stick to basic building principles. There's a lot of collective experience on here, and we all love to help another builder along. Its just like building our own ovens once again! Good luck, and keep the photos coming!

Cheers Petec good to know...was thinking I may have to encroach on the veg patch even more!
Nice one Danno, I shall bear that in mind when (if) I get that far! I agree with pad not showing. Should be covered with more paving one side and decorative stones the other. I'm already about 6" deep but had to call it a day (Ash tree roots aren't the friendliest!) Shall probably go a couple inches deeper to allow for some hardcore then I should be on the case to Jewsons for the first load of materials. Ahem, which I shall have to work out and make a list!!!
I take it the Jewsons discount is still on the go? I joined up so will be making a call in the week.
Aaahhh see...Questions are starting to flood my mind already...

C'mon the Brummies - not many of us on here mate (I think). Good luck with the build. I've got some stuff left over from mine that I haven't got round to posting in the for sale section so I'll let you know when I do

Yeah, I guess there's not too many people around these built up area parts that are into outdoor ovens! My neighbours are gonna think I'm crazy I'm sure.

Any updates on your build as I'm also in Birmingham so any lessons learnt, more pictures, etc would be highly appreciated
