Photos to follow once i've taken them...
Been looking to build a door for a while and i've just managed to sneak in a wee bit time.
I sourced a solid oak 50mm kitchen worktop from gumtree for the princly sum of £10 and cut it into the oven mouth shape. I bought some cal-sil insulation board and i'm going to attach it to the back of the oak which in my head will make it heatproof (to an extent) and i've bought some nice chrome bolts to fix it with.
It's a simple idea, but i think it'll work.

thats the next stage im thinking about, was thinking of getting my wood supplier to give me a nice thick log to cut up adn wondered how i was going to protect it from the fire.
I do have some ceramic blanket left but not too sure how id incorporate this, maybe encase it in some metal behind some decorative wood
Look forward to your pictures

My one is just a cheap idea, so if it doesn’t work then it’s not a huge loss. I’ve not seen a lot of information about building oven doors and it looks to me that people just tend to go with a simple idea.
I originally thought of building a hollow door from steel (I’m a decent welder) and filling the cavity with sand to create the insulation but my first attempt proved that it’d weigh an absolute ton!!
I think a lovely piece of polished wood as a door would look lovely.

You could fill a hollow door with vermiculite rather than sand to make it lighter. I made my oven door from oak planks and one thing I have found is that it does split if you let it get too hot - so some form of insulation or reflective surface is definitely required. I am planning on cutting out a stainless steel cover to go on the inside, so that a lot of the heat will be reflected away from the wood.

My oven door is a huge chunk of tree BUT when I rebuilt the mouth I forgot to reshape it around the door!! So for the moment I just push it to. Am still living in hope of finding an old aga type door with the temp. Gauge in it. Just had a thought I am going to cut my door narrower and drill a hole to wedge one of the cheap stab it type of temp gauge in and see if that works!

Thats a good idea actually, maybe a bit of ceramic blanket first then the stainless cover.
I'm having the guys round for pizza and poker at the weekend so i'll be a good oportunity to get the door finished and give it a go after the pizza is demolished.

My door... 3x3 Oak, glued and dowelled, then cut and shaped to 5mm less than front arch of oven. Metal from a storage heater, cut as a half circle (which fits inside the oven arch, minus a couple of mms for expansion) plus a half inch, cut and folded to create tabs and welded to a 2" wide strip all round to make like a pie tin. Stuff with Rockwool insulation. Fit some old handles from kitchen units through Oak with extra long bolts. Fit another half circle, same as inside radius of steel, of 1" plywood to the oak with woodscrews, a quarter of an inch from the bottom. Drill holes around the side of the "pie tin" half an inch from the top. Push onto the 1" ply, and screw into place. Glue stove rope to act as a gasket. Flue gas Thermometer from Clas Olsson. An insulated, solid wooden door. Your calsil will work just fine, but it is a bit brittle.

Danno
What a fine work of art!!. A door is something that I've never attempted, but often been tempted especially after seeing the doors that have been made and detailed in this section of the forum......maybe one day.
Nice job...

I only put it on there for a bit of an explanation, into what can be achieved relatively easily! But thanks for the kudos! Danno..out.
