bear with me - not sure if I'm going to explain this very well.... Given that any insulation is better than none and you probably can't have too much !! What would the optimum solution look like ? Nearly ready to crack on with my build and currently planning to have layer of celcon/ breeze blocks under oven base. Is there any real benefit in casting a layer of vermicrete and/ or a ceramic board of some description as well ?? Tend to view that being a little ott in build saves in long run !! Hope this makes sense - thanks for any thoughts Simon all problems are opportunities.....................

Hi Simon,
I know a lot of people on this forum use blocks - I personally used 3-4" vermicrete and cannot feel any bit of heat leaking from the slab.
Doesn't necessarily matter what approach you take but you are correct it's probably better to be a bit more OTT than the opposite.

If I were to do mine again it would be CF board on a celcon block ring. Vermicrete is a pita to work with by comparison.

....I would do the same as my last build. Concrete slab, celcon/thormolite blocks, fire-brick hearth.
I haven't used CF board before....some people lay it below the thermal layer.....and others have laid it on top of the thermal layer?
